Lewis Merrill Obituary

Lewis P. Merrill

Resident of Seacliff

After a full and adventurous life, Lewis Merrill of Aptos passed away peacefully on July 4, 2010. A wonderful father and a valued friend, Lewis celebrated his 90th birthday in January at the Seacliff Visitors Center with his 5 children, their families, many friends, and his fellow docents.

Lew had a passion for kites and spent much of his time building kites, flying kites, and sharing his love of kites with others. He started a Kite Program at the Seacliff Visitor's Center where he helped hundreds of children learn how to build and fly kites. He was affectionately known by many as "The Kite King".

Lew served in the Merchant Marines from 1943-45 but spent most of his career in the family precision sheet metal production business. He was company president the 20 years preceding his retirement. He also served as president of the Sunnyvale Rotary and remained active in the Los Gatos Rotary until he was almost 90.

The family will conduct a Burial at Sea on Sunday, October 10, 2010. Lew's family invites friends and neighbors who'd like to celebrate Lew's life with them, to come to the Seacliff Visitor's Center at 5pm, that day, for a potluck. Come early and fly a kite!
