R.I.P. Mike. Just found this in a search for you online. Now I wish I had tried a lot earlier. I'll never forget all the great times we had playing in our band, traveling all around and having fun everywhere we went. I regret loosing contact for so long now. ---Zack

Mike and I bought a 20-game ticket to the Giants in '82. We braved the cold of Candlestick drinking coffee (honest). Mike would hang on every pitch - fully into the game. I’m sure that’s the way he played his music too. The Giants finished 3rd that year in a close race, but eliminated the Dodgers on the final weekend. Mike and I were ecstatic. Never have I enjoyed a baseball season more than in '82 because of Mike.

I got to know Mike, the Cougill brothers along with the Quinto House ‘gang’ over massive amounts of coffee at Bob's Big Boy restaurant. We started and ended almost every night parked in a window booth. It was the pre-Starbucks, pre-cell phone, pre-texting era and we had little to distract us other than the waitresses. Subjects and conversations were discussed until completion. Positions were raised and debated. Coffee was consumed and refilled. It was the movie 'Diner' before the movie 'Diner'. The Cougill brothers could have sued if they knew someone stole their story. Bob's restaurant didn't do a very good business with us... Coffee was the only purchase - but we always left a nice tip. In the end Bob's went out of business (no help from us), and no other restaurant filled the void. Eventually we drifted apart.

I would run into Mike every year or two after that, and whenever I did it was just as familiar as if we’d been hanging out continuously. He was always entertaining and warm, bright and current, happy and kind.

I will miss you Mike. See you in that diner in the sky.

In 1982 Mike Cougill and I bought a 20-game pack to the SF Giants. We would sit in the draft of Candlestick and drink coffee (honest). Mike would completely immerse himself in the action (the same way he did his music) but always joking and enjoying the sights and sounds of the park. The Giants finished a close 3rd that year, but on the final weekend the Team stopped the Dodgers from advancing, and that was a moral victory almost as sweet as the division title. I never enjoyed a baseball season more than the '82 season because of Mike.

My friendship with Mike and the Cougill brothers formed over many cups of coffee at Bob's Big Boy Hamburgers. This was before Starbucks and the Cougill brothers were the original cast of the movie "Diner". In fact, they could have sued for plagiarism. Nearly every night began and ended at Bob's. It's where we met before the night started, sometimes going separate ways, and re-gathering at nights end. The brothers all but owned a window booth; never buying more than a cup of coffee, but leaving generous tips for the waitress - which were 'natrually' being ogled by us 20-somthings. Every subject was discussed to completion. It was the pre-cell-phone, pre-texting, pre-internet era... We had plenty of time and few distractions (other than the waitresses of course). Bob's eventually went out-of-business, and I think we all felt a little guilty (but got over it quick). Yet no place could every replace that window booth and eventually everyone moved on - in different directions regrettably.

Over the year I saw less-and-less of Mike, but when I did he was just as warm, friendly and familiar as if I'd been hanging out with him the whole time. Easy to talk to, thoughtful and entertaining, warm and kind.

I'll miss you Mike.
