Rev. Richard Patrick Vaughan, S.J., died March 19, 2012 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He was born in Los Angeles on May 26, 1919, and after graduating from Loyola High School, entered the Jesuit Order at Los Gatos in 1937. He was ordained a priest in 1950 and pursued graduate studies in clinical psychology at Fordham University, receiving his PhD in 1956.
He was professor of psychology at the University of San Francisco, 1957-67 and served as Dean of the Colleges of Arts and Sciences there, 1967-69. During his tenure he established the Psychology Department as well as the University's Counseling Center. He became a licensed clinical psychologist in 1967.
In 1969 Dick was named Vice Provincial for Education for the California Province of the Society of Jesus and in 1971 was named Provincial of the California Province. During his tenure, he oversaw expansion of Jesuit ministries to poor and underserved communities, fostered a team ministry approach, and strengthened the financial resources of the province.
Leaving office in 1977, he returned to Los Angeles as Lecturer in the Graduate Program in Marriage and Family Counseling at Loyola Marymount University until 1987. During that time he was also engaged in private practice in counseling and psychotherapy for priests and religious. He was the author of four books and many articles on pastoral counseling. Upon his retirement, he kept up his interests in gardening, theology, psychology and art history.
He is survived by his sister, Sister Judith Vaughan, O.P., of San Rafael, and many nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and nieces and cousins.
The funeral Mass will be held Monday, March 26, 2012, 7:30 p.m. at the Jesuit Community Chapel, Loyola Marymount University, 1 LMU Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Burial will be in the Jesuit plot at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara, CA
on Tuesday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m.
