Robert MacConnell Obituary

Robert Trebor MacConnell

Resident of Sunnyvale

Robert "Mac" MacConnell died November 21 at the age of 83, leaving his wife of 56 years, Claris; his three sons, Richard (Janet), Robert (Trena), and Ted (Cindy); and six grandchildren.

Mac was born in Jamaica, B.W.I., on May 30, 1927. He and his brother, Barrie, were raised in Flushing, New York, by their writer father and costume-designer mother. Mac graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He spent two years in the Navy and was 50 miles from Bikini Atoll when the atomic bomb was tested.

Mac and Claris married in 1954 and lived in the Oakland hills with their three boys until 1969, when they moved to Sunnyvale.

Mac built a career on his knowledge of the technical aspects of production systems, rising to director-level management in various manufacturing and engineering firms. After earning a master's degree in Total Quality Management from San Jose State, he became a Lead Auditor and Quality Assurance consultant, advising companies on ISO 2000 compliance and coauthoring a book on the subject.

Mac was an avid gardener, traveler, theater- and concert-goer, and bridge player, and especially loved coaching and refereeing with AYSO.

A celebration of his life will be held in January.
