Rose Lee Ortmeyer Obituary
Rose Lee Ortmeyer
Apr. 1, 1920 - Apr. 5, 2013
Resident of San Jose
Rose Lee Ortmeyer peacefully passed away on April 5, 2013 at Merrill Gardens, in San Jose, CA, four days after her 93rd birthday.
Lee saw the passing of her loving husband, Donald William Ortmeyer in 1993. Don and Lee's oldest daughter, Jane Yale, passed in 2006.
Lee is survived by five children, Charles Ortmeyer (Kristie Turoff) of Alamo, CA, Ann Ortmeyer (Jim Goodlin) of Los Gatos, CA, Gwendolyn Ortmeyer of Sherborn, MA, James Ortmeyer (Nina Gentile) of Philadelphia, PA, Susan Ortmeyer (Jon Neff) of Ben Lomond, CA; and by Jane's husband Steven Yale of South San Francisco, and 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Lee was an energetic and very capable woman. In Sacramento, where Don and Lee raised their family, she drew on her Swedish heritage to start the Orange Horse Gift Shop and Tea Room. The Orange Horse had many faithful and committed employees and customers over the years. Lee was a member of the P.E.O Sisterhood since young adulthood. She was the benefactor of countless dogs and cats, going back to her childhood on an Iowa farm in the 1920s. And in their regard for a good education, she and Don Ortmeyer gave a priceless gift to their children and grandchildren.
Lee could always be counted on to help those who needed her, and she was the hub for her extended family. She was the BEST Mother and Grandmother, and loved very much by her family and many friends. In particular, Lee was close to her friend of over 50 years, Patty Kelly of Marin County, and to the entire Kelly family.
The family gives thanks to the members of Willow Glen United Methodist Church, and to Indumati Patel, Latani Medeiros, and Haregewoin Debele, and the other caregivers at HomeWell, Merrill Gardens, and Palo Alto Medical Foundation. All helped Lee retain her dignity, independence, and spirit to the end.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Willow Glen United Methodist Church, 1420 Newport Ave., San Jose.
