Ruth Susoff Obituary

Ruth Elizabeth Selleck La Fontaine Susoff

Resident of Palo Alto

Our beloved mom and grandma left this earth on October 14th after a brave battle with cancer. Being realistic to the very end, she felt that God's will be done. Ruth was quite proud to have reached age 92 ½! She was born to the late Lillian F. Cannon and Fred B. Selleck in Lewistown, Montana and was preceded in death by her loving brother, Daniel J. Selleck. Through our "Uncle" Susie she met our late dad, Michael W. Susoff, and they promptly married 11 weeks later. Mom loved being involved, from her time at age 19 as a union representative, through her involvement as Girl Scout leader, church choir member, founding member of Masterworks Chorale and bookkeeper for a women's shelter. She served as President, Vice President, Treasurer and produce market volunteer of Lytton Gardens where she lived the past 11 years. Mom thrived there and made lots of dear friends. She traveled to Europe and China with Masterworks which satisfied her curious nature. She always made room for one more kid or pet and had several "surrogate" children and grandchildren. Mom loved camping at R-Ranch at the Lake for over 50 years with her family. She is survived by her five loving daughters, Catherine Boicelli (Daniel) of The Sea Ranch, Elaine Finn-Mogan (Matthew) of San Mateo, Carol Flanigan-Hidalgo (Rafael), of Redwood City, Mary Luke (Rylan) of Cupertino and Nancy Pon (Cameron) of Daly City, and 12 adored grandchildren, four cherished great-grandchildren, her dear niece, Nancy Donally (Phillip) of Superior, MT and two great-nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews. A service will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 178 Clinton St, Redwood City on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at 11:00 am with interment immediately following at Skylawn Memorial Park. Friends may visit on Monday, October 18th after 5:00 pm at Sneider Sullivan & O'Connell, 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo. Memorial donations may be made to Lytton Gardens Senior Communities, Palo Alto.

Hi Mom,
God, I miss you so terribly. I can hardly believe that you have been gone 3 years on the 14th. I know that you and Dad are taking care of Cathy now too. I miss her so much and wanted her to have a long life like you did. I love you all so dearly. So glad that I am your daughter. I could not have asked for a better mom.
Love,

Mom, almost a year and it still seems like yesterday. I miss your words of wisdom, laughing with you over funny things, and talking with you about your life. Thank you for teaching me how to be strong in the face of adversity, looking deep and finding that strength to carry me through. I love you.

Its been an incredible hard year without you, I keep wanting to pick up the phone to talk and I remember I can't. But I look up into the sky and see those clouds and know you are right there with me. I have been riding horses every weekend and it just brings me closer to you. I love mom. Love you, Nancy

Dear Family,

Ruth and I shared many times together. She was my roomie on the Masterworks tour of China, and she was one of the delightful guests at my annual birthday party in honor of Placido Domingo. We called ourselves "the Domingo Dining Dames" and had a birthday dinner in January complete with theme. She always dressed the part and brought a wonderful dish to share. We loved the twinkle in her eye and the witty conversation she added to our group. I will remember her always. You had a very wonderful mom.

Rest in peace, Mom. You were so loved by so many, but especially by us. I will miss you every day of my life, but was blessed to be your daughter. I love you, "Mott".

I have been bringing my Corte Madera students to Lytton Gardens for 8 years for our oral histories project. Every year Ruth was the first one to sign up to be part of our program and was always eager to have the children interview her about her incredible life. She helped recruit other residents to participate and loved interacting with the children. She inspired so many students over the years. Each year my students asked if Ruth could be their senior buddy to interview! During our music programs Ruth was always sitting in the center seat in the first row! Ruth's passion for life has inspired me to live life to the fullest. When she told me she had cancer she told me it would not stop her from living and she planned on making it to 100!
Our visit to Lytton Gardens next week will not be the same without Ruth waiting in the lobby for us with open arms. I am deeply saddened by her passing and I extend my sympathies to her family. She was a special lady who I will never forget.

We loved Grandma Ruth. She had a real passion for life, and was always doing something she loved. She inspired others to live life more passionately and to live each day to it's fullest. Ruth will be missed, but never forgotten.

Erin, and Steve.
