I just dropped off my son back to UChicago and fondly remembered Neil as he prepared me for the day our son first left home two years ago. He is frequently in my thoughts and prayers. I am sure he is resting in Eternal Peace. I still miss you very much, my friend.

Colleen and family - Although I have been out of touch for quite some time I was extremely saddened to hear of Neil's passing. I remember him as such a gentle soul when I worked with him at HP in the "early" days. My heart and condolences go out to you.

Colleen and family, I am so sorry to hear about Neil's passing. I enjoyed working with him at AMD. He always did the right thing for the business, was very supportive in executing marketing campaigns, and was a top notch professional. I always felt blessed to work with him. Please know that he will be missed, even by those who haven't stayed in touch lately.

I am shocked and saddened to hear about Neil. He was very special person, a great mentor and a sincere friend. I worked with with for about two years at AMD. I still remember the dinner conversions I had with him during out of town conferences. He was extremely compassionate, humble and kind. I am at a loss to find words to express my sadness on losing such a great friend.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Kelly family in this difficult time. May God give them patience.

Dear Kelly Family - I had the supreme pleasure of working at AMD this past year with Neil. He always gave me wonderful guidance and imput but the thing I loved about him most was his humor and outgoing personality. Being in Houston, he knew I'd always take his 'after 5pm' calls just because he was a pure joy to work with. He'll be missed by so many, I can't imagine the numbers. My deepest sympathy on your loss - Neil will be remembered so fondly by all everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him.

Colleen,
I worked with Neil over the phone and email most of the times, and a few times pleasure of meeting him in person. He was a great person, and I’m sure he is in peace, and the good Lord is smiling on him as he is approaching the pearly gates. My heart goes out to your family and I pray to God to provide you with the patience to cope with this lost. He will be missed.

I worked with Neil for many years, but I think what I'll remember most about him are all those things outside of work. His genuine zeal for life, his warmth and humor, his advice and perspective will never be forgotten. After he left HP, I didn't keep in touch as much as I should have, but every time we exchanged emails or saw each other at a conference, it was as if time stood still. He was always so proud of his family. He was a man to be emmulated, both in work and in life, and I will miss him.

I worked closely with Neil for a few weeks in 2004. He was moving on to a new position and I was taking over some of his old responsibilities. He was incredibly patient, kind and selfless in bringing me up to speed and setting me up for success in my new role. It was a joy hanging out with him and hearing about his children who are a few years older than mine. He was always earnest in listening to my parenting travails and he gladly shared his always thoughtful insights. He was a kind soul.

I am so sorry for your loss. Words cannot express the sadness that I have felt upon hearing this terrible news and my heart goes out to your family. I have had the privilege of working with Neil at AMD and he was a joy to be around, a leader in so may ways and a shining example to all of us on how to lead a successful life - both personally and professionally.
I last saw Neil in San Francisco at VMworld and had the pleasure of spending several days working the AMD booth with him. He was always available to answer any work related question but also spent much time talking about his love of his family and his hobbies. He had such a zest for life that was contagious and I will never forget him. I hope you find peace in the knowledge that you were always in his thoughts and heart as I know he will live on in yours. He will truly be missed.

I learned so much from Neil over two years sharing a cube wall - I can hardly believe he is no longer with us. Even more than our conversations about work, climbing, or Dylan, Neil's love and pride as a father were an inspiration. Neil generously shared his experience and wisdom - one Neilism that's often calmed me in times of stress is "will this matter in a year, or ten years from now?" Neil: we'll still be missing you in ten years.

I worked with Neil for several years at PeopleSoft/Oracle. Whenever I would express frustration with something, Neil would sit quietly for a second and then say something that would illustrate a different perspective that would resolve my frustration. He was wise and kind. I admired the way he would talk about his family - his eyes would brighten and it would be immediately clear the love and joy he felt for and from them. Neil was a great man and will be missed by all that knew him.

Zach Holmes is in Israel right now and is mourning the death of Neil. Neil always invited Zach to events that Brendan and and my son Sammy were going to. Zach remembers his generosity. Today, Zach went to the Western Wall of the old Jewish temple in Israel. He asked several of the religious leaders how he can best provide his prayers. About 20 of the religious Jews brought Zach into their group and they all prayed for Neil and for your family at the Western Wall.

The services for Neil today were wonderful. Below is a version of what I said at the service, which I slightly modified as I spoke:
Neil was my climbing partner for the last four-plus years, both at the climbing gym and occasionally outdoors. He was very helpful and encouraging, often pointing out ways to handle difficult problems, and impressed with my climbing achievements even if they weren't necessarily all that impressive. He also was just an enjoyable person to be around, full of stories of people from other aspects of his life – family, work, photography – people that I’m glad to see and meet today.
I never worried about my safety when Neil was at the other end of the rope. I'll just give one quick climbing story about Neil. Indoor gym climbing is generally pretty safe, but there's one type of climbing style called lead climbing where if you lose your grip on the wall, you can fall five to fifteen feet. Then you'll stop falling, but only if your climbing partner is paying close attention. Normally the climbing partner is paying close attention when you fall, because you're climbing a difficult route, you're obviously struggling, or you even call out "watch me here!"
One time a year ago I was doing a warmup lead climb on a very easy route. Fifty feet up, nearly at the top of the wall, I reached out to the left to grab an easy handhold with both hands. When I weighted it with my body, the hold, bolted to the climbing wall, suddenly spun 90 degrees and dumped me. The easy route gave Neil no warning; I hadn't been having any trouble with it; and I think all I managed to say in my surprise while falling was "uhh…"
Neil of course had been paying close attention anyway, and used the rope to catch me on a ten foot fall. He was someone you can trust, and I'm very
glad to have had so much time with him.

Neil was so happy for us when my daughter was born, and didn't hesitate to share stories of when his kids were babies. He said he had fond memories of those times.
Neil was very professional about his work, and was respected by everyone who worked with him. We need more Neil Kellys in this world.
The last time I saw him was at the RSA conference in April, just days after I'd been laid off from a startup. He'd offered to help out and gave me his card. I'd just come across it again moments before I heard the news, intending to take him out to lunch over the next month.
He will be missed.

To all the Kellys, the previous posts have noted the integrity and pride in self & family that characterized Neil. I will relay the enthusiasm he had for his sons and their evolving lives when last met, and his inspiring insights on life that he so freely shared. I will miss his strength and compassion, and wish you the energy to ultimtely find that same strength in his memory.

Colleen and Family, Our thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I was shocked and saddened to hear this news via the HP Alumni network. We all worked together in as a part of the Neely Sales Region Systems Engineering Team and even though I was in Southern Neely locations, Neil had a far-reaching impact on us throughout the Region. He will be remembered very positively by the NSR Team and beyond. May he rest in peace with the support and prayers of so many of us he touched.

I have been privileged to work with Neil, and am blessed to have known him. I recently hiked White Mountain, which Neil revealed to be one of his well-liked camping, climbing, and photography spots. He shared with me some of his photos, and suggested I join him on a climb sometime. I will always think of Neil when I think of White Mountain.

Neil was a wonderful person. Every time I saw him at the gym he had a smile on his face and said that every day was a good day if it started with climbing. He and Colleen were a role model for us when we embarked on the adventure of marriage - I admired their love and respect for each other and how he gushed about how wonderful she and marriage were. He also gushed about his children and we heard quite a bit about their adventures in the Middle East, northern California and most recently turkey hunting. Neil set an example for many of us to follow - by doing so we will honor him and his memory. Karen of Karen and Brian in Mountain View

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Neil these past three years. He was such a professional, admired by his coworkers, both inside and outside the company. Neil was always on top of the issues, always a pillar of rational thinking, and unflappable in the face of any challenge he faced. In our hallway conversations, he often shared, with much pride, stories of things he did with his family. Neil will be missed by all those who knew him.

Neil was always such a warm, joyful presence at Planet Granite--- by far one of our favorite climbing buddies there, and an impressively fit guy. He was clearly someone who knew how to get the most out of life, and we were always so happy to see him there. Plus he always managed to hit the new routes ahead of us and provided awesome beta! Neil's priority at AMD was relationships. Judging from his openness, warmth, and bright eyes, I expect this priority permeated the rest of his life as well. Neil stood out as a hard working, intelligent individual full of integrity. He seemed to live life to the fullest and dive all the way into his hobbies and interests, such as photography and rock climbing. And he was a family man above it all. He would often share a story with me about his children at various stages of their lives. While I wouldn’t consider us close friends, and only worked on a project together occasionally, I admired him greatly. All my sincerest sympathy and healing thoughts go out to his family and close friends.

I am so sorry for the loss of Neil. Many of us just spent three days in Austin with him where he spent considerable time relaying his love for his family and excitement for the holidays he was to spend with them. His pride for his family was evident at all times. As Rich Brunner said in his post, we all could see the high standard Neil set for the rest of us, certainly at work, but even more so in our personal lives and integrity. I hope that everyone can honor Neil's memory by cherishing our own families in the same manner as he always did.

Dear Colleen,
I am in shock and very sadden over the loss of Neil. I just spoke and worked with him in photography class last Saturday. I know how much he loved you and your children because he spoke of all of you during our many long hours of printing black/white photography @ CSM. He was an enormous talent in our class and I marveled and envied his body of work. He was always there with his warm, quick smile, offered his hand at any helped needed and his quiet demeanor always made me feel calm whenever I was around him. I know many of us in class will miss him terribly, as I will and know that we will never forget Neil. He was very special to all of us. I hope that the memory of his love and devotion for you and your family will help you through this difficult time now and in the coming months and years.
