Andrew "Andy" J. Fontes Resident of San Jose 12-3-1922 - 11-17-2012 Andy passed away peacefully in his sleep after a long and full life. He was born in Gustine, CA. After discharge from the Army in 1946 he moved to San Jose with his loving wife Maxine. They were married for 53 happy years before Maxine passed away in 1999. He is survived by his daughters Linda McNevin and Kathleen Fontes, son in law Michael McNevin, grandson Scott McNevin, granddaughter Kelly Walker and spouse Michael, brother John and spouse Toni, sister Adelyne DeGregori and spouse Joe, sister in law Dolly and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Joe. Andy got into the piping industry in the early 60's with Thayler Pipe in Oakland. In the late 60's Paramount Supply purchased Thayler pipe and took over ownership. In 1969 Paramount Supply asked Andy if he was interested in opening a new location in Santa Clara, so he agreed to and that's how Andy got to Santa Clara. In 1972 N. O. Nelson then made an arrangement to purchase the majority of the stock in Santa Clara location and Andy began his career with Santa Clara N. O. Nelson. Andy ran the store and trained many sales people some of whom are still running stores of their own, Jim Dalton, John Wyatt, Rick Mortenson and Gary Krans to name a few. Andy was on the ground floor of building a group of supply companies for N.O.Nelson/now called Winwholesale. In 1978 he moved from management to concentrate on sales and training. During his tenure he helped drive sales from 500k to 80m. Andy was well liked and respected by all the people involved in the industry including buyer's, engineers, owners and customers. He semi-retired in 1996, but stayed working two days a week training salesmen which is what he loved to do. In March of 2005 he fully retired. Andy always stayed in touch up until the time of his passing. The industry has lost one of the true pioneers of the industry. Andy enjoyed living at The Villages Golf and Country Club for over 30 years. He valued the many friendships he made in The Villages and surrounding community during his life. Our gratitude goes out to the staff at Belmont Village Assisted Living for the loving care they provided to Andy for the last six months and to VITAS Hospice Care. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1st at 11:00 am. at The Villages Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Andy's name to VITAS Hospice Care, The
. Andy will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
