It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Gerald Asao Shimada. Gerald passed away peacefully on March 4, 2014 with his daughters, Alisha and Jordan and his wife, Marilyn by his side. Gerald was born February 19, 1950 in Oakland to Joe and Nancy (Natsuko) Shimada, both whom preceded him in his passing. Gerald attended University of California, Berkeley and went on to receive his MA from San Francisco State University. He began his career at San Francisco State University and never left the education field. Education was his passion along with devoting time to girls youth basketball group. First, as a parent spectator, then, as a coach and finally, a mentor to many that he coached, helping them further their education through scholarships. But above all, he was a devoted father to his two daughters. Watching them grow to become young adults & attending their college graduation made him a proud father. Gerald was Interim Vice President of Student Services at Chabot College. Gerald recently celebrated his 20th year of service to Chabot College on March 1st. Besides his wife & daughters, Gerald is survived by his sister, Barbara Whitlow, many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.
