Raymond P. Buford
May 15, 1921 - March 12, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Raymond Pierce Buford passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, March 12th at the age of 92.
He was born in Granite, Oklahoma to Ezma Mary and Arthur Burton Buford on May 15, 1921. He was the 2nd born of five children, two girls and 3 boys. First born, sister Odessa, passed away as an infant, they were then blessed with the birth of Raymond. Then followed brother Winston (predeceased in 1980), sister, Betty, (predeceased in 1990), and youngest brother, Charlie.
Dad is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, Lucy Eizabeth (Beth Dalton) Buford. Married on April 14, 1947, just one month and 2 days short of 67 years. He also leaves behind their only child, Beverly Ashburn, son-in-law, Tom, of Los Gatos, granddaughter Kimberly Ashburn Roa (Christian), of San Jose, grandson, Matthew Ashburn of Los Gatos, and great-granddaughter, Whitney Elizabeth of San Jose, born on October 17, 2013, to whom he truly delighted in, and his brother, Charlie (Bonnie) of Visalia, Ca.. Dad is also survived by numerous wonderful nieces and nephews.
Dad lived in Granite, Oklahoma until the age of 16. Because of the Great Depression his family left Oklahoma and moved to California, settling in the Central Valley in the town of Visalia. There his family began a farming and dairy business. In addition to a farming partnership with his dad and brother Winston, Dad also worked in the furniture business for 45 + years.
Dad was drafted into the Army on October 7, 1942 serving in World War II, in the 165th Infantry. He served in the Asiatic Pacific from June 1944 to Dec. 30th 1946, fighting in the Battle on Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946. His brother, Winston, was also drafted into WWII and they actually served together on Okinawa.
After making Visalia home for most of his life, Raymond and Beth moved to San Jose in 2004 to be closer to their daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. For almost 10 years we have been blessed having mom and dad in close proximity. We will all miss dad's kind, sensitive heart, and his great humor and quick wit.
Friends and family are invited to a Memorial Service at Darling & Fischer, Chapel of the Hills, 615 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos, Calif., on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 3:00 P.M. Dad was a huge lover of animals of all kinds, in lieu of flowers, if desired, you may wish to make a donation to the Humane Society Silicon Valley, 901 Ames Ave., Milpitas, Calif., 95035.
