Josephine Hutchings "Jo" McCall Obituary
Josephine "Jo" Hutchings McCall
March 26, 1922 – March 20, 2014
Resident of Sunnyvale
Josephine passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 20, 2014.
She was the loving wife for 52 years to W. Ray McCall (deceased), mother of Sandra (Stephen) Koelzer. Evan (Suzanne) McCall, and Kristine (Mark) Ashton. Cherished Grandmother to Tyler, Sarah, Michael (deceased), Kyle, Christopher, Connor, Geoffrey, Andrea, Morgan, and Hannah. Sister to LaVere (Anne) Hutchings, deceased; Grace, deceased, (Owen) Karstad; Margaret (Lawrence, deceased) Slack; and Thomas Hutchings, deceased. Beloved Aunt of over 200 nieces and nephews.
Josephine was a wonderful friend to everyone she encountered. She lived an exciting life. She was one of the first eighteen Women Marines in WWII, 1943-1945. She was stationed primarily at the Marine Corps Air Station in Mojave, CA. Off-hours, she played piano with her sister, Grace, in the Mojave Air Station's 14-piece dance band. Jo was an avid musician, a master of the piano and organ. She hosted her own radio show, "Hammondaires with Josephine." She composed and taught music, conducted choirs, volunteered music programs in schools and communities and could play any type of music on request. She instilled this love of music and gracious service in her children and grandchildren – several are performing professional artists.
A lifelong athlete, Jo lettered in sports in high school and college. For the past 27 years she could be found in the De Anza swimming classes doing water exercise with her friends. She loved all sports especially the Golden State Warriors. She and Ray loved playing golf.
Josephine enjoyed traveling the world. particularly on cruises and road trips. She served two years with Ray on an LDS mission in the Canary Islands.
Josephine will continue to inspire all who knew her thanks to her love of life, music, learning, laughter, generosity, courage and perseverance.
She was a remarkable, strong woman and shall always remain as one in our memories.
