Reverend Carroll Joseph Keating, S.J., died June 13, 2014 at Regis Infirmary, Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, after a long illness. He was 83 years of age, a member of the Jesuit Order for 65 years and an ordained priest for 55 years.
Carroll was born in San Francisco on April 21, 1931. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos in 1948. He was ordained a priest in San Francisco on June 9, 1961.
Carroll's ministry was divided between the high school classroom and the parish church. Upon completion of training, he was stationed at St. Ignatius Prep where he was a teacher, counselor and community administrator.
In 1986 he began his twenty year association with St. Mel's Church, Fair Oaks where he served as associate pastor until declining health caused him to retire to Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. In both the classroom and the parish, Carroll was known as an uncomplicated and kind priest, who displayed continual gentleness and careful attention to the needs of others.
He is survived by a cousin, James Haughey of Oroville, CA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2014 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, 300 College Avenue, Los Gatos, CA 95030, followed by committal at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, 490 Lincoln Street, Santa Clara, CA 95050. Donations in honor of Father Keating may be made to the California Province of the Society of Jesus, P.O. Box 68, Los Gatos CA 95031, or to a charity of your choosing.
