Sumino Aso Obituary
Sumino Aso
Resident of San Jose
Sumino Aso, 100, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2014 in her hometown of San Jose, California. She leaves her three daughters Joyce (Don) Miyamoto, Nancy (Ed) Nakamoto, and Dorothy (the late David) Lundgren, her grandchildren, Mika (Tyler) O'Neal, Megan (Garrett) Lewis, Brian, and Kirsten, and her three great grandchildren, Ryan, Natalie, and Kimberly. She was born on February 22, 1914 in Fukuoka, Japan, to Shohichi Abe and Masa Kuwano. A minister's wife, Mrs. Aso was married 51 years to the late Chikara S. Aso, reverend of the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin from 1935 to 1955. As we celebrate her life, she will always be remembered for her resilient spirit, endless humor, and devotion to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Her faith helped her overcome the hardships of immigration to the United States, Japanese internment in Heart Mountain, Wyoming during World War II, as well as the loss of her only son, Osamu. Mrs. Aso was an accomplished flower arrangement and tea ceremony instructor, avid gardener, artful Waka poet, and devoted mother. She will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held on July 19, 2014, 3:00 pm, at the Willow Glen Funeral Home, 1039 Lincoln Avenue, San Jose. Her inurnment will be at San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, San Jose. Those who so desire may make memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Aso to the Yu Ai-Kai Japanese American Community Senior Service Center (588 N 4th St., San Jose, 95112) or the San Jose Betsuin Buddhist Women's Association (640 N 5th St., San Jose, 95112).
