Genoveva Tellez Garcia Obituary
Genoveva Tellez Garcia
August 9, 1946 - August 10, 2014
Redwood City
Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, Genoveva passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family shortly after celebrating her 68th birthday. A longtime resident of Redwood City, CA and former member of the order of nuns Sisters of De La Salle (Hermanas Guadalupanas de la Salle) she is remembered by those who knew her as a strong and courageous woman who even in her last year and days battled with courage against the GBM brain tumor that took her too soon from those who loved her. Originally from the state of Michoacan in Mexico, she joined the sisters of De La Salle as an adolescent and went on to serve for the De La Salle family for close to 15 years in Mexico and in the US. Her fond memories of her sisters and time as a nun she cherished and shared with those closest to her as well as her recollections of the US she encountered in Mississippi, Minnesota, Illinois and Texas where her service as a nun took her during the era of the Civil Rights movement and Vietnam in the 60's and 70's. Although cloistered as a nun and limited without radio and newspapers, she came to know through the university students of De La Salle of the local marches students and priests participated in and the news of Dr. Martin Luther King's passing nearby. She went on to start her own family after leaving the sisters of De La Salle and settled in the early 1970's in Redwood City, CA where she raised her three children who went on to fulfill her dream of obtaining a university education. She is remembered fondly by her coworkers at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, CA where she worked for close to 27 years. She leaves behind a legacy of courage in the face of adversity and is survived by her three children Angelica Aguilar (Antonio Calderon), Tenoch Aguilar, Azucena Aguilar and two grandchildren David Mateo and Diana Valentina.
Friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thurs. Aug. 14th from 8 am to 9:30am at the Redwood Chapel, 847 Woodside Road, Redwood City, CA. Funeral services and entombment to follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 22555 Cristo Rey Dr., Los Altos, CA commencing at 10 am.
