Jackie (Jack) Drue Doss of Santa Cruz passed away peacefully on March 25th from complications related to Alzheimer's disease. Jack was born in Louisiana to Wiley and Cecil Doss. Jack was a State Champion in Golf and Basketball at Neville High School in Monroe Louisiana and attended Louisiana State University on a golf scholarship. After serving his country in the Army Jack turned professional in golf. He played on the PGA Tour in the late 50's and early 60's competing in the 1960 PGA Championship and winning the 1960 Louisiana PGA Championship. After playing the tour Jack began what was to be a long and storied career as a PGA Golf Professional (PGA Member since 1954) apprenticing under former Masters Champion Claude Harmon at the famed Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York. Jack went on to serve as Head Golf Professional at many of the countries finest clubs including Virginia Country Club in Long Beach, California where he fell in love with the beautiful Barbara Hough. Jack and Barbara were married on May 8th, 1964 and had three wonderful children together.
In 1987 Jack began a second career as a full time golf instructor where he earned numerous awards including the Northern California PGA's Teacher of the Year Award in 1997. As a golf instructor Jack was able to touch many lives and will be missed by his many adoring students.
Jack is survived by his older brother Wayne Doss (Port Saint Lucie, Florida), wife of 47years Barbara, sons Michael (Lori) of Seal Beach, California, Mark (Stacey) of San Mateo, California and daughter Tracy Platts (Stanford) of Laguna Beach, California as well as six Grandchildren.
A private family service has been held in Los Gatos, CA.
