Robert Susich Obituary
Robert Stephenson Susich
Nov. 25,1931, to Oct. 26, 2012
Resident of San Jose
Robert was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He was a proud first generation American; his parents came to this country from Serbia in the early 1900's. He attended the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Institute of Technology. After graduating he joined the Air Force, where he served for four years. One of the highlights of his military career was serving as a Serbian translator to visiting Yugoslavian military personnel. During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Doris. After leaving the Air Force, he began his career as an engineer, working mostly on Department of Defense missile and radar projects. This work brought him and Doris to eight different states and three tours in the Marshall Islands, working on Kwajalein Missile Range.
During their 60-year marriage (and over the course of many moves!) Bob and Doris raised seven children. While in the Marshall Islands Bob loved swimming, golfing, snorkeling, softball and racquetball. Bob was an avid reader, and had an amazing knowledge of world history, especially all things related to WWII. Up until the time of his death, he was an intensely curious and highly intelligent man who could easily discuss everything from the stock market to world affairs to how his Chicago Bears were doing.
He was extremely proud of his Serbian heritage and was deeply involved in his church, St. Michael Archangel Serbian Orthodox Church of Saratoga. He spent many happy Sundays there, where he sang in the choir and loved the spirited discussions with his church friends after mass.
Bob was a profoundly caring and giving man throughout his life, and gave generously to many different charities. He had a deep love of animals and enjoyed the company of many treasured pets over the years.
His greatest joy in life was his family. He and Doris had seven children - Steve Susich (Marcia), Jeff Susich (Donalee), Donna Tarlton, Karen Silva (Francis), Kathy Formica (Gary), Janet McCarthy (Brian), and Amy Schneider (Joe). His eleven grandchildren - Lacey, Nicole, Elizabeth, Wyatt, Brenna, Carson, Corinne, Cole, Jack, Ava and Lucas - made him extremely happy and proud.
Bob was predeceased by his mother and father, Jovana and Tripo Susich; his brothers, William and Sam Salatich; and his beloved wife Doris, who passed away only three months before him. He will be missed greatly, but we are comforted knowing he and Doris are together again in Heaven. We will always remember his intellect, his wit, and his loving and caring spirit.
A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, November 1st, 11:00 a.m., at St. Michael Serbian Orthodox Church in Saratoga. Graveside services to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.
