George Stephen Avanessian |
George Avanessian passed away at his home in Hillsborough, California on October 28, 2012, surrounded by his loving family
Born on July 7, 1935 in Harbin, China to Stephen and Goharik Avanessian, he spent his earlier years in China and eventually Iran. These early challenges formed George's keen sense of values and family devotion. In 1954, George made the decision to come to the United States and began what would become a true story of the American dream. Speaking only Russian and Armenian, he learned English so that he could pursue his education.
In 1961 George graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Sciences in Architecture degree. In 1966 he opened Avanessian and Associates. George was responsible for projects world wide with several distinctions and awards earned throughout his career including the California Official Design Award. Most important to George was his philosophy that his clients were more then just customers; they were friends in business and in life.
He married Patricia Jaramillo on November 29, 1963. They began what would be a marriage of nearly 49 years.
In addition to family, service to others was important to George. He served as president of the Boys and Girls Clubs from 1972-1977 and in 1983. He was a member of Rotary International, and was named a Paul Harris Fellow. George also loved all animals and devoted time and energy to their wellbeing.
A large and loving family survives George, including his wife Patricia, sons Stephen and Mark, daughter Christine, grandsons Steven and Christopher, granddaughter Lillian, son-in-law John, daughter-in-law Chaunise; sister Nina Kazarian and the family pet, Abby.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 12th at 10:30 am in the Tiffany Chapel, CYPRESS LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 1370 El Camino Real, Colma, CA. Interment Cypress Lawn.
