Resident of Saratoga
Vince Garrod of Saratoga went to his final meeting on December 30, 2012. He left an everlasting impact upon the Santa Clara Valley through his gifts of open space, community involvement, loving husband and father.
Born in 1918 and raised in Saratoga California, Vince spent his life on the family farm. He attended Los Gatos High, Cal Poly, and UC Berkeley. In May of 1941 he married Jane Whiteman. They built a home in Saratoga, on the family property and had 6 children. After growing prunes and apricots for 50 years, he developed the horse livery business establishing Garrod Farms Riding Stables. In 1970,wine grapes were planted and the family ranching operation grew to include 28 acres of wine grapes and winery: Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards. Along with developing a 1200-acre hay/cattle ranch in Northern California. He served on numerous boards. At the age of 28 he charted the California Association of Soil Conservation; many years spent on the Saratoga Union School District Board; Black Mountain Soil Conservation District; Los Gatos-Saratoga Parks and Recreation District, California Canners and Growers (CAL CAN); Santa Clara Fire Commission, Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST); and help found the Santa Clara County Water District. He taught Agriculture at San Jose High School, was a 4-H leader, an Agricultural consultant for PG E, and played the bass with the Skillet Likkers.
Vince is survived by his wife of 71 years Jane Garrod, 6 children,14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Jan 13, 2 p.m. at the Saratoga Federated Church 20390 Park Place Saratoga, reception at the Saratoga Community Center 19655 Allendale Ave Saratoga.
