George Francis Obituary
George F. Francis Resident of Santa Clara Oct. 26, 1928 - Feb. 1, 2013 George F. Francis was born in Holmdel, N.J. and died peacefully on February 1, 2013 after a long illness. Following service in the US Army for two years (being stationed in Korea), George attended Boston University, Gettysburg College and Ohio State University. After graduating, he gained a great deal of work experience as an employee of various consulting engineering companies, involving a rather adventurous assignment in Alaska. Following that, George moved to California and began working as an urban planner. In 1964 he accepted a planning position in the Santa Clara County Planning Department where he worked until his retirement in 1987. George loved the outdoors and was an avid skier and hiker. He met his wife, Susanne, on a Sierra Club ski trip, and from then on they were inseparable and got married on Christmas Day, 1970. They also both enjoyed nature photography and traveled repeatedly to the Bavarian Alps where they could pursue these hobbies. Following his retirement, George developed Alzheimer's disease, and it gradually became impossible for him to pursue his favorite outdoor activities. After almost 20 years of suffering with the disease, George's life ended peacefully on February 1, 2013. He is survived by his wife and his sister Connie, nephews Robert and Wayne and niece Susie and her family. I would like to thank all the wonderful people who helped me with my care of George and gave me much needed advice and physical and moral support: George's physicians, our friends Jean and John, Arleen, Barbara and Elliott, Betty and Boyd, Bryan and Terri, Lavonne, Lisa, Lynn and Tom, Traci, our neighbors, and the staff of the Live Oak Day Care Center and the Crescent Villa Assisted Living Facility. Susanne M. Francis
