Paul Calvin Andriese passed away March 17, 2013 at his home surrounded by loving family. He was cherished by all who knew him, and he affected many lives with his kindness, generosity, humor and teaching. He had a gift for making people feel important and welcome, and an insatiable curiosity about the world around him.
Paul was born to John and Maggie Andriese and grew up in Alameda, California. He served in the Navy's Hospital Corp in the Pacific Theater during WWII.
After the war, Paul studied at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI, receiving a BS in chemistry and biology. He then returned to California, where he attended UC Berkeley as a graduate student, earning a PhD in Zoology in 1968.
After a wonderful courtship that included many trips to the Sierra for skiing and hiking, Paul married Thelma Avedikian in January, 1956. They had three children, Patty, Diane and Tim.
After earning his PhD, Paul moved his family to Monte Sereno and joined the Biology Department at San Jose State University where he was a professor for 20 years. He was a highly acclaimed and caring teacher who had high expectations for his students' success.
Paul was a devoted father and grandfather. He took his family on many traveling adventures teaching them about the world around them. Paul truly treasured his family and made many trips to visit them no matter where they were in the world.
Paul is survived by his devoted children, including daughter and son-in-law Patty Andriese and Rick Alexander of Arcata, California, daughter and son-in-law Diane and Greg Pihl of Aubrey, Texas, and son Tim Andriese of San Jose, as well as his beloved grandson and wife, Michael and Megan Pihl, grandchildren Amy and Sarah Pihl, and Calvin Andriese; brothers Ted Andriese of Spring Lake, Michigan and Roy Andriese of Ripon, CA.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Paul's life on Saturday, April 6, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church, 20455 Herriman Avenue, Saratoga, CA.
