1942 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Danny Richard McClain
Setember 25, 1942-March 27, 2013
Resident of Campbell
Danny Richard McClain, a devoted and loving husband, supportive father, and rare friend, passed away from complications related to dementia. He was 70 years old.
Dan was born in Salt Lake City, UT. He graduated from Bountiful High School valedictorian of his class and attended the University of Utah for two years before volunteering to serve in the Air Force, being stationed three years in Ramstein, Germany. Honorably discharged, Dan returned home, earned a BA in Economics from U. of Utah and married mother of five, Mary Hoffman. The family soon moved to Los Gatos, CA., and Dan taught at Bellarmine High School, coaching high school basketball and debate, simultaneously becoming a fixture in Los Gatos youth baseball. In the early seventies, Dan purchased Alberta's and opened McErics, retail gift and card shops in Almaden, Los Gatos, and Silver Creek and began an office supply delivery business. In the early eighties, Dan and Mary purchased a home in Montana's Madison River Valley, where they summered. They owned and managed The Blue Heron and Three Seasons gift stores in Ennis, returning for winters in the Bay Area. Dan was a superb fisherman. He hosted friends each fall on the Madison and made expeditions to Patagonia and Christmas Island with his fishing buddies. A quick wit, lifelong Democrat, ardent supporter of Stanford basketball, Dan was self-reliant and a national expert in collectable fishing gear, publisher and co-author of The Art of the Creel (with Hugh Chatham). He was instrumental in founding the Madison River Foundation, dedicated to promoting river preservation. A generous and fun-loving grandfather, he loved nothing more than to drive the grandkids to shows and ice cream treats in West Yellowstone and lead visitors on tours throughout the Park.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Mary, and six children; John, his wife Bobbie (La Quinta, CA), Joanne, her husband Gary Sarmento (Alamo), Judy, her husband Pascal Jeambon (New York City, NY), and sons James (Jim) (Highland Park, CO), Jeff (San Jose), and Joseph (Joe) (Campbell). His grandchildren are Jill Park (Alameda), Deanna and her husband Eric Nickerson (Oakland), David (Dave) Sarmento (Spokane, WA), Celina Rodriguez (Ft. Collins, CO), Nicolas Jeambon (Boulder, CO) and Sonia Jeambon (New York City). Great-grandchildren are Evan and Cristina Park (Alameda). Dan is survived by his mother, June McClain (St. George, UT), sister Nancy McClain (Bernalillo, NM), and aunt Bonnie and her husband Henry (Hank) Kohler (Spokane). Dan will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service is scheduled for Darling & Fischer, Chapel of the Hills, 615 N. Santa Cruz, Los Gatos, CA, Saturday, March 30 at 2:00pm. Family and friends are then invited to celebrate Dan's life at Viva, 15970 Los Gatos Blvd, Los Gatos, CA.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dan's honor may be sent to the Cedar Creek Employee's Fund or the of Northern California.
