Nicholas Delurgio Obituary
Nicholas David Delurgio Resident of Santa Cruz Nicholas David Delurgio passed away peacefully at Sacramento Subacute on March 19, 2013 at 2:15pm in the arms of his wife. Nick is survived by his wife of 40 years Leta Delurgio; his daughters Birgitta Hughes (Allen), Andrea Delurgio (Daniel Eisenman), and Rosanna Delurgio; his grandchildren Rhys Hughes and Faith Hughes; and his brother Phillip Delurgio. Born in Glendale, CA to Philomena & Nicholas Delurgio on March 26, 1948, Nick graduated from Hoover High School ('66) and earned a bachelor's degree in psychology ('70) and a master's in education ('71) from Stanford University. After college, Nick went on to teach special education and coach track and football. It was through teaching that he met Leta. They were married at the Stanford Chapel on June 3, 1972 and raised their three daughters in Santa Cruz. In 1979, Nick changed careers and founded Diversified Financial where he served his clients as a financial advisor. Life often brings unexpected challenges. Nick's came in the form of a rare condition called syringomyelia. In Jan. of 2008 he became a quadriplegic and was confined to a wheelchair. He stayed in the family home and continued working until his retirement in July of 2012. This accomplishment was a testament to his drive to persevere. Toward the end of his life, Nick's faith gave him strength, particularly the Biblical passage repeated over 75 times in by Jesus and his angels, "Be not afraid." A funeral mass was prayed on March 25, 2013 at St John the Evangelist in Carmichael, CA. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 3rd from 5pm - 8pm at The Stanford Faculty Club, 439 Lagunita Dr, Stanford, CA. The family designated spinal cord research in the Stanford University Department of Neurosurgery to receive gifts. Checks may be payable to Stanford University and sent to Stanford Medical Center Development, 3172 Porter Drive, Suite 210, Palo Alto, CA 94304.
