Resident of San Jose
John Clifford Eldred passed away on November 28 after a brief illness. His enthusiasm for life and positive outlook were as welcoming as his ever ready smile.
John was born in Oneonta, New York to Clifford J. and Emilyn B. Eldred on February 19, 1925. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, later graduating from Syracuse University, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He worked for several years at his father's Packard dealership. In 1959, he began a 31 year career at IBM as systems engineer. He worked at several locations in New York, and finished his career in Palo Alto. In retirement, he earned a Certificate of Paralegal Studies at the University of San Francisco. He enjoyed traveling and photography, and supported City Lights Theatre, San Jose Opera, San Jose Repertory Theatre and Symphony Silicon Valley. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church choir in Mtn. View for 24 years. He was a long time member and Treasurer of the Mountain View IBM PC Club. He also belonged to the Alfa Romeo Association of California, and could be seen driving his red 1986 Spider around San Jose and along the California coast.
He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia, his children Nancy (Doug) Dunkly, Robert (Elizabeth) Eldred and Steven (Marci) Eldred, step-children Michael Gough and Thomas Gough, grandchildren Robyn (Jessy) Vera, Nolan Dunkly, Andrew Eldred, Daniel Eldred, and four great grandchildren as well as nephews William and James Eldred and nieces Susan Eldred-Kujawa and Janet Eldred.
His kindness and joy for life will be missed by his family and by all those who knew him.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013 from 5-9 pm including a vigil service from 7-8 pm at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 W. El Camino in Mtn.View, and the funeral mass on Monday, Dec. 9, 2013 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Church, 582 Hope St., Mtn. View. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.
