Richard H. Hamilton
1923 - 2013
Resident of Palo Alto
Richard "Dick" Hamilton passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2013, in Palo Alto, California, from natural causes after a lengthy illness, and is now at peace.
A resident of Palo Alto for over 70 years, Dick was born on December 5, 1923, to Alice and William Brodie Hamilton in Santa Barbara, California, and grew up in Los Angeles, California. He served in the US Navy from 1943-1945, receiving his wings as a Naval Aviator, and was a flight instructor while stationed in Corpus Christy, Texas. He earned his degree in Economics from Stanford University, where he continued his studies and received his MBA.
Dick worked for SRI, formerly Stanford Research Institute, for 20 years conducting major market studies for C&H Sugar, Del Monte Food Corp, and many other major corporations and governments. He also was Director of Marketing Planning for Dole Pineapple for 10 years. These positions allowed him, sometimes accompanied by his family, to visit over 30 countries around the world.
Dick enjoyed woodworking, photography, politics, and the theater, especially Shakespeare. He was an avid sports fan of the local professional and Stanford teams, but most important, of his boys' athletic pursuits, and later, his grandchildren's activities.
The love of his life, Marjorie Hamilton, whom he called his Lady Marjorie, was at his side when he passed. They were married for 68 years, having first dated when Dick was 15. He is also survived by his two sons, Brodie Hamilton (Sharon) of Davis, California, and Jim Hamilton (Dora) of Pleasanton, California. In addition, he leaves 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 8 nephews and nieces, and many caring friends.
The family will have a private remembrance and requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Tom Hamilton Scholarship Fund, supporting the scholarship that Dick and Marje established in memory of the passing of their son, Tom Hamilton, in 1969. The scholarship is awarded to a college-bound student athlete from Palo Alto Senior High School, for which the family has returned to Palo Alto High for over 40 years to award .
Checks payable to the Tom Hamilton Scholarship Fund may be sent to: The Tom Hamilton Scholarship Fund, 5706 Corte Libre, Pleasanton, CA 94566.
