Henry Carl Henning Obituary
Henry Carl Henning
San Carlos
Our beloved father, Henry Carl Henning "Hank" passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on December 14, 2013. He was born on November 2, 1913. He just celebrated his 100th birthday. His family emigrated to San Francisco from Germany in 1925. Hank graduated from Polytechnic High School, worked as a butcher in his father's shop on Haight and Fillmore and also as a weight lifting coach at the Olympic Club and YMCA. He performed as one of The 5 Equilibrious, an acrobatic troupe that entertained people on Catalina Island and tour boats in the late 30's. In 1941, during World War II, Hank served as a cook in the army, stationed at Camp Roberts, Ca. The same year, he met the love of his life Elizabeth, "Betty" at a German Club dance, in the California Hall, SF. They married in 1944, moved to San Carlos, and raised nine children. For 51 years, Hank worked at and owned the Village Food Market in San Mateo. He valued the relationships he formed in the community he serviced. He loved to go to Bay Meadows racetrack and to play golf.
Hank was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty, his son Larry Henning, and his son-in-law Jerry Walters. He is survived by his children, Michael Henning (Lilly), Sue Henning (Mike Wallace), Tom Henning, Mimi Hayes (Peter), Jayne Henning Childress (Tyler), Jim Henning (Karen), Judi Walters, Jaci Johnson (John); and by his 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Service will be held at Crippen & Flynn Carlmont Chapel, 1111 Alameda de las Pulags in Belmont on Saturday, December 21st, at 3PM, Visitation will begin at 2PM. Sign the guestbook at www.crippenflynn.com
