Rev. Dr. Paul Kim
Mar. 31, 1958 - Feb. 6, 2014
Resident of Santa Clara
The Reverend Dr. Paul Hyoshin Kim passed away on February 6, 2014 surrounded by family members at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Santa Clara, California; he was 55 years old and died of an aneurysm.Paul Kim, son of the late Reverend John Kim and Grace Kim, was born in South Korea on March 31, 1958, and immigrated to the States with his family when he was 10 years old. He attended Princeton Theological Seminary where he earned a Master of Divinity (M.Div) degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree. He is also a graduate of Abraham Lincoln High School (San Jose, CA) and Bethany Bible College (Santa Cruz, CA).

He previously served as the pastor of the First UMC of Ridgefield Park, NJ and the Little Falls UMC, also in New Jersey. In addition to his pastoral work, Rev. He served as the first executive director of the National Campaign for Peace and Reunification of Korea sponsored by the National Council of Churches, and was at the forefront of promoting dialogue and reconciliation among people of faith in North Korea, South Korea, the United States and other superpowers in the region. He believed strongly in the need for interfaith dialogue and traveled to Turkey with the Interfaith Dialog Center in New Jersey to speak with Muslim religious leaders. He also served on the board of directors of GreenFaith, an interfaith coalition for the environment.
He will be remembered mostly for his gentleness, compassion and warmth by the many people from all walks of life who encountered him. He believed passionately in the basic goodness that resides in each person and delighted in sharing meals and personal stories with those around him.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years Dr. Christie Y. Huh, and his mother Mrs. Grace Kim of New York City, brother Hyosung Kim of South Korea and sister Jinsoo H. Kim of New York City, as well as by his pet therapy dog Evie.

Paul Kim was my roommate at Bethany College, a groomsman at my wedding and a friend. He went to Princeton and I went into the pastorate in CA. He moved back to CA and I moved to Idaho, so we were not able to meet for anything. My prayers are with his family and his church. I miss him too. But my hope is one day soon, in glory, to catch up on all that has happened so quickly.

I am so deeply saddened by Paul Kim's death at such an early age. He was one of the finest people I have ever known. All my sympathies to Christie, his family and many friends. I will visit the columbarium at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine where he is interred often. Nancy Wight, New York City

It was because of the support of Rev Paul and his wife that my father and my family were able to cope with my mothers passing last summer. Kind heartfelt empathetic and so approachable. We will miss you!! The Cooke and Hexem families

I remember Rev. Kim as a student at Abraham Lincoln High School in San Jose and his wonderful sister, Helen. He was a gentle person of great intelligence. I am not surprised that he became a minister, advocated for social justice for all, and touched so many lives by his ministry. My heartfelt condolences to his family and may he be at peace in the arms of God. (Julie Sly, ALHS class of 1978).

To Dr. Christie Huh
Dear Christie,
We are deeply saddened to hear about Paul's unexpected passing. We heard the sad news from our daughter, Anna Rhee just now. Many grateful memories of Paul come back in such a fresh way. Paul was indeed a dedicated leader for peace and justice for all, particularly for peace and justice in Korea. We remember him with deep sense of gratitude for his passionate leadership as the first Executive Director for the National Campaign for Peace and Reconciliation of Korea !!
May God's comfort and strength be with you, Christie !!
Gratefully yours in Christ,
Syngman Rhee, President of NCCUSA, 1993 and 1994, [email protected]

I really missed Pastor Kim when he left our church in NJ a few years ago. He was so kind to me and my family when my son was hospitalized for several months following two brain bleeds. He always gave me such comfort. Rest in Peace.

Pastor Paul, you were such a bright light and inspiration for me. We were blessed at Campbell United Methodist Church to have known you - though too short a time.
Thank you for your gift.

Pastor Paul will be sorely missed by myself and my family, as well as the church, he was a good man with a big heart and even bigger smile. He had time for everyone and would talk about anything that anyone wanted to talk about. He made me a better person by just being himself. I will miss him deeply and we wish his wife and family strength during this dark time.
