Joseph Kochly Obituary
Joseph Kochly
1922 – 2014
Resident of San Carlos
Joe Kochly, a longtime resident of San Carlos, passed away at his home on February 20th, with his beloved wife at his side. He was born April 25, 1922, in Naperville, Illinois, the only child of Joseph Sr. and Ellen Kochly.
Joe attended St. Bede Academy in Peru, Illinois, and began college as a pre-med major at North Central College. After two years of college he interrupted his education in 1942 to enlist in the Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific Theater during WWII, and participated in the Battle of Okinawa.
During the war, Joe also found time to court and marry the love of his life, Ann Riedy. They were wed on February 19, 1944, and celebrated 70 wonderful years together the day before he passed.
After the war, Joe and Ann were part of the great migration to California, settling in San Carlos in 1951. He worked at the Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard, then SRI International, Menlo Park, and finally Physics International, San Leandro. Although Joe never returned to college to finish his education, he became a self-educated Electronics Engineer. He was a Senior Instrumentation Engineer and a Project Manager by the end of his professional career.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Ann, children Robert (Linda), Stephen (Mary Jo), Susan Karnacki (Bruce), twelve grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his oldest child, Kathleen. Joe was totally devoted to his family, and spent many days on remodeling and repair projects at his children's and grandchildren's homes. He was truly gifted with his hands, and could build or fix just about anything.
After their kids were grown, Joe and Ann discovered the worlds of square dancing and round dancing. They made a large circle of friends, and thoroughly enjoyed the dancing and socializing. Joe could still dance a tip or two until several months before his death.
A celebration of Joe's life was held at Vivace Ristorante on February 22nd, with his entire family and many friends in attendance. Private services were held at St. Charles Church on February 25th. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery. Sign the guestbook at www.crippenflynn.com
