In Loving Memory of Bernard (Ben) Schadler
Born in Benton Harbor, Michigan and went to Benton Harbor High School. Ben was starting guard of State Champion Basketball team and quarterback of the State Champion Football team. He was Senior Class President and then attended Northwestern University. There he lettered in Basketball, Football, and Baseball. Ben was on the 1947 All American Basketball Team. He was in the first professional Basketball draft and played professional basketball for the Chicago Stags, Detroit Vagabond King, and Waterloo Hawks. The Detroit Lions drafted him and the LA Rams made inquires of his availability.
Graduating from Northwestern's Navy ROTC program Ben served his country as PT 600's Executive Officer. He served in the Philippines also as the Assistant Intelligence Officer. While there he played on base's baseball and basketball-teams.
Ben's work career started with the Rexall Corporation, which caused him to relocate to the West Coast. There he met the love of his life Polly, playing volleyball at a church picnic. Polly Schadler is his surviving spouse of 65 years. Their love was so great that no one thought of them as Ben or Polly, it was always what Polly and Ben did together. They both became entrepreneurs owning two independent pharmacies in the San Francisco Bay Area for 38 years. The majority of their lives (55 years) was spent in San Carlos, CA where he was a Babe Ruth Coach. They made a late move to Camas, WA to be with family.
Ben died peacefully on January 30th at Southwest Washington Medical Center with family by his side. Competition was a large part of Ben's life. He competed till the end playing cards, board games and earlier in golf, billiards, tennis & life.
Survived by daughter Sherry Kallman, granddaughter Christy Dominge (Ben),and great grandson Andy Dominge. Grandson Eric Kallman (Becca), great granddaughter Delaney Kallman and grandson Matthew Kallman.
Survived by son Steven Schadler (Linda), granddaughter Stacey Forbes (Cory), and great grandchildren Owen & Chelsea Forbes. Granddaughter Cheryl Preisz (Eric), great grandsons Grant & Trenton Preisz and grandson Andrew Schadler.
