Cheryl (Sabus) Lyter

Cheryl Sabus Lyter, 53, passed away on Oct. 4, 2012, after a long, heroic fight with pancreatic cancer. She was born on Oct. 31, 1958, in Jefferson, Iowa, to the late Gene Sabus and Audie Sabus.
While Cheryl did many things in her life, her one true love was teaching. She taught in many places but fell in love with Emmett, Idaho, where she taught from 1991 to 2012. She was proud to be a teacher and was voted the teacher of the year for Gem County in 2006 by her peers, an award she cherished.
She graduated from Cañon City High School on Cañon City, Colo., in 1976 and the University of Southern Colorado in 1981. She was teaching kindergarten in Colorado Springs when she met and married the love of her life. She was married to Clifford Lyter at the United States Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel on Aug. 3, 1985. She moved with her family to Emmett in 1991 and fell in love with the community and its people. She taught first grade at Butte View Elementary School and then at Carberry Elementary School in Emmett.
Cheryl loved the outdoors, tennis and going for long walks, but being with her family and watching her children in all of their activities brought her true joy.
She was preceded in death by her father and nephew, Ryan Hulsey.
She is survived by her husband; son, Jacob; daughter, Jessica; mother, Audie Sabus of Cañon City; sisters, Frankie (Duane) Connors, Patty (Dusty) Bellow, Judy Hulsey, Linda K. (Ted) Pope, Debbie (John) Kimmick and Nancy (Larry) Hendricks; brother, Fred (Diane) Sabus; and numerous nieces, nephews and her dog, Maggie.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Emmett on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at 7 p.m. Services are under the direction of the Potter Funeral Chapel with Pastor Lance Zagaris of the First Baptist Church in Emmett officiating.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial, if desired, may be made in her name to the First Baptist Church in Emmett, the Emmett Public Library or the .
