Mona died on Aug. 23, 2013, at a local hospital in Emmett. She was born on Dec. 13, 1924, at Glendale, Calif. She was the first of six children born to Relda and Ethel Church Handley. They lived on a ranch on Soldier Creek for 20 some years.
She graduated from eighth grade in the one room school house at Drybuck, where she stayed with her grandparents Al and Monie Church because it was to far to commute from home. She then attended Emmett High School and graduated in 1946. Mona attended Links School of Business.
She joined the United States Air Force
in 1951, where she traveled across the United States five times. Then she went to Europe where she was stationed at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Mona enjoyed traveling. While in Germany she visited Athens, Rome; Nice, France; Ireland; and Berlin. She took a tour on the Rhine River, went to Holland and Denmark. Not bad for a little mouse who had not been further than Emmett from home.
After her discharge she worked for the United States Army
in California, the Forest Service in Idaho and the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington.
Mona is survived by two brothers Burke Handley of Ontario, Ore. and Sherman Handley of Emmett, a sister Elizabeth McDermott of Pinehurst, Idaho and two great-granddaughters Chelsie Lee and Taylor Miller.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Verona Claire Osborn, a brother Keith Norman Handley, a son Joseph Randolph LaGrone and her grandparents.
No services were held at her request.
