Helen Hughes Walker, 95, of Star, Idaho, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014.
She was born July 18, 1918, in Enola, Ark., to Porter Wane Hughes and Edna Tyler Hughes. She was the eldest of five daughters.
In her growing up years, their family lived in Gurdon, Ark., Safford, Ariz., Twin Falls, Idaho and lastly settled in the Boise, Idaho, valley in 1933. She loved the gospel and at the age of 21, she served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Independence, Mo.
Upon her return she married her sweetheart Edward LaMar Walker on Feb. 14, 1941, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She is the mother of seven children; Marla Helen Goodrich (Rainier, Ore.), Gary Wayne Walker (Star), Janice Walker Hall (Sandy, Utah), Dennis LaMar Walker (Nampa, Idaho), David Hughes Walker (Emmett, Idaho), Kent Franklin Walker (Everett, Washington) and Lori Ann Johnson (Sammamish, Wash.).
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Mother served throughout her life in the Relief Society, Young Women's and Primary organizations.
She taught her children to love the Lord and to serve Him, to love unconditionally, to value hard work and to always have integrity. Her beautiful and clean home was always welcoming to family and friends. She loved providing hot bread out of the oven and fresh fruits and vegetables from their garden to all who came to her home. Many family memories were created in Grandma's kitchen.
Helen delighted in her posterity. She loved being with her children and grandchildren, learning of their accomplishments and dreams. She also loved searching out her ancestors and found great joy in learning of their lives. She loved beautiful scenery and was always ready to accompany her sweetheart on fishing trips.
She was a great example of service, continuing to serve others to the end.
She is survived by her seven children and spouses, 36 grandchildren and 127 great-grandchildren, at present. She is also survived by one sister; Edna Wane Hughes Ipsen of Boise.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Star Main Street Chapel, 434 S. Main Street, Star. Viewing prior to the service 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Cloverdale Memorial Park, Boise.
