Sidney R. Buma, 92, of Ashland died Tuesday, March 19, 2013 in the Golden Living Center, Worcester. He was the husband of Doris L. (Hall) Buma. Mr. Buma had been employed as a design engineer manager for the GE Telechron Company in Ashland for 29 years, retiring in 1982. He previously worked for the former Whitin Machine Works in Whitinsville. Sid was born April 21, 1920 in Whitinsville, son of the late Dirk S. and Harmke (Haringa) Buma. He was a graduate of the Worcester Boys Trade High School in Worcester and had received his Professional Engineer Certificate from Northeastern University. Mr. Buma had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as a B-24 Pilot. Mr. & Mrs. Buma observed their 65th wedding anniversary on May 31, 2012. A resident of Ashland since 1954, he was a longtime member of the Ashland Federated Church in Ashland where he sang in the choir for over 50 years and was a former deacon. He was a longtime member and former president of the Ashland Lions Club. He was an over 50 year member and Past Master of the Granite Lodge of Masons A.F. & A.M of Uxbridge, and had served as a former Assessor for the Town of Ashland. Sid was an avid golfer and bowler. In addition to his wife Doris, he is survived by a son Kenneth W. and his wife Francine Buma of Holden; two daughters, Karen E. and her husband Fred Dobelbower of Clinton and Kerry L. and her husband Joe McGuane of Lunenburg; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services, with full military honors, will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 11 AM in the Matarese Funeral Home, 325 Main St., Ashland, 01721, preceded by a calling hour from 10-11 AM. Burial will follow in Riverdale Cemetery, Providence Rd. (Rte. 122), Northbridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ashland Lions Club, P.O. Box 150, Ashland, MA 01721.
