Jacqueline Durbin, 85, died Sunday, October 13, in the Umass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester. She is survived by her companion of 45 years, John F. ORourke. Ms. Durbin was born in New York City, October 18, 1927, the daughter of George and Pauline (Conlin) Durbin. She was a resident of Wayland for many years before moving here in 2010. She was a graduate of Natick High School, and Framingham State College, where she earned both a Bachelor of Arts, and a Master of Arts degree. An elementary school teacher in Wayland for many years, she was co-author of the Sircla Reading Program. She was the assistant headmistress at Wayland Academy for 20 years, prior to retiring in 2010. Ms. Durbin attended Saint Marks Church in Sutton, and she was a member of the Wayland Teachers Association. A woman of many, diverse interests, she especially enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, teaching, dancing, music (especially jazz and Sinatra), dogs, gardening, flowers, and travel. Ms. Durbins family will establish the Jacqueline Durbin Early Readers Foundation in her memory. The foundation will encourage and assist young readers, kindergarten-grade eight.
