John Hutchins Frey, 79, of Marlborough, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester. Born in Bath, Maine, he was the son of the late Frank K. and Dorothy E. (Hutchins) Frey and the husband of Nancy (Shea) Frey, of Marlborough. Following his graduation from Rindge Tech, Mr. Frey was awarded a full scholarship to Harvard University
from which he graduated in 1953. He then earned a masters degree in geophysics from Boston College. In 1955 he enlisted in the US Army
serving overseas. Following his discharge in 1957,he began his career as a scientist and was employed by Sea Farm Research and later Dames & Moore conducting research. Subsequently, he was employed by the University of Connecticut at Storrs where he was responsible for the development and deployment of databases. His love for antiques became a second career, and for many years, he and his wife have traveled the area as antique dealers. Besides his loving wife of 57 years, Nancy, he is survived by his four devoted children, William J. Frey of Framingham, Martha F. Johnson and her husband, Scott, of Marlborough, John H. Frey Jr., of Vienna, Va., and Diane F. Frey and her partner, Gillian MacNaughton, of Somerville; his brother, Harold Grant and his wife, Susan, of Port St. Lucy, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Virginia Grant of St. Augustine, Fla.; and his grandchildren, John H. Frey III Will of Fairfax, Va., and Jared S. Johnson, Katherine S. Johnson and Benjamin F. Johnson, all of Marlborough. He was also the brother of the late Howard Grant. Visiting hours are Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 7 p.m., at the Slattery Funeral Home Inc., 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough. Burial will be held in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, and will be private. Donations may be made to the Marlborough Food Pantry, 255 Main St., Marlborough, MA 01752.
