William Randall Obituary

Judge William I. Randall, 96, of Longboat Key, Fla., died Sunday, March 4, 2012. He was born in Framingham, on Sept 13, 1915, where he had lived most of his life. He lived a full life and enjoyed being with his many friends and family up until the end. The family home on Edgell Road was always full of friends and neighbors; many of whom considered it almost a second home. He will be remembered as a caring man who helped many people throughout his life. He had a great memory and was a terrific storyteller. He was a graduate of Framingham High School, Yale University, and Harvard Law School. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he returned to Framingham to form Sheridan and Randall, Attorneys-at-Law. He served as a selectman from 1947 to 1950. In 1951, he was elected to the Massachusetts General Court as a member of the House of Representatives. In 1965, he was elected to the Massachusetts Senate and served until 1970. He was appointed chief justice of the Massachusetts Land Court in 1971, and retired in 1985. In 1985, he was awarded an honorary juris doctorate degree from New England School of Law. In 2004, he relocated to Longboat Key, Fla. He is predeceased by his wife, Harriet, in 1991, and is survived by his wife, Clare Goss Randall; his three children, William, Jonathan and Eleanor (Deedee); his stepsons, Edward and Tyson; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Services are Tuesday, March 13, at 1 p.m., at the Chapel of Edgell Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the charity of ones choice. Judge Randall was one of the kindest, open, decent, admirable and intelligent men I have ever met. He was also so much fun and gave me such great advice about my career. I was privileged to be his law clerk from 1983 through 1985. He loved his family and generously shared his family and friends at many a get together. After the death of his lovely wife Harriette, he married a family friend of ours, Claire Goss and I was lucky enough to sip cocktails on his Madison porch and visit with them often. The judge would always serve my daughter Margot a Shirley Temple on a little tray with great ceremony! When I last visited shortly before his death, I brought him some of his favorite foods, pies and chocolates. When I told him he was looking well he replied " You've got to be kidding!" The man had such a great, dry sense of humor. I will dearly miss my great friend and mentor and I am so very blessed to have had him in my life. You will never be forgotten Judge. I love you.

Although I had not been in contact with Senator Randall (which is what I called him in the 60's!) for several years, he frequently was in my thoughts. He was truly a mentor to me and so many others, too many to count. I was an intern in Senator Randall's office in 1967, while in high school. To say I learned a lot from the experience and from Senator Randall is an understatement. Rather than tell me not to chew gum, he sat me down and asked me how I think I looked when I chewed gum. I have not chewed gum in public since! He was kind, respectful, and always had time to chat. He set the high standard for gentlemanly grace, so deserving of all the accolades and positions he held in his illustrious career. I will always be thankful of the role he played in my life and career and will hold him dearly in my thoughts forever.

My last note from Bill was an invitation to his 90th birthday at Ken's. He was a very decent and humane man. He was always very gracious to me. I hope that he continued in good health until shortly before the major surgery which is mentioned in the obituary notice.
My best regards especially to his two sons and daughter.
