Frederick A. Janes 93, formerly of Holliston passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013 in Sarasota, FL. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 69 years, Shirley (Anderson) Janes who passed away on May 31, 2011. Fred was born in St. Johns, Newfoundland April 19, 1919 and emigrated to the United States with his parents Walter and Alice (Squires) Janes and his twin sister Marjorie at the age of 5. He grew up in Melrose, MA and attended Springfield College. Upon graduation in May of 1942, Fred enlisted in the US Army, beginning 28 years of military service, retiring as Colonel from his role as Commander of the Quartermaster Company of the 26th Infantry Division of the Army National Guard in Framingham, MA. Fred was a lifelong learner and educator, teaching in the Framingham schools for 34 years, most of those as Director of Physical Education, before retiring in 1979. Fred was also active in his hometown of Holliston, serving on many community boards including the Finance and School Committees. Following retirement, Fred and Shirley enjoyed many active years in Bourne, MA and Cape Haze, FL where Fred managed to get in at least three rounds of golf a week, well into his 80s. He is survived by his three sons, Kenneth of Kennebunk, ME, David of Sarasota, FL, Brian of Tiverton, RI, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Services will take place at the Sarasota National Cemetery on Friday, February 8, 2013. Memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota, FL
