Shirley A. MacInnis

1926 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
Shirley Anna Giles MacInnis, 87, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2014, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Judy MacInnis DesRosiers and Paul in Gastonia, NC after a short but fierce battle with multiple myeloma. Shirley was a native of Lincoln, MA, born on August 27, 1926 to the late Thomas Farrar Giles and the late Stella Anne Campbell Giles Church. She was married for 66 years to Raymond A. MacInnis, who died August 1, 2013. They had the same exact birthday, and she hated the fact that Ray would happily tell people how old he was, while she would have preferred to keep her age quiet. Shirley and Ray resided in Framingham, MA for 55 years. Shirley was first and foremost a homemaker, but later in life she worked for a number of years as a home health aide, which she enjoyed. She would have liked to have had a career, but that was not an option; in her fifties she got an associates degree in accounting and was so proud of her achievement. Around eighty years old, she discovered bridge and enjoyed playing/learning with her friends at the Callahan Senior Center up to three times a week. Through February, she walked up three flights of stairs in her building for exercise. She was a woman of strong morals and faced life head-on. She raised all her children to do their best and to be able to support themselves. In addition to her parents and her husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her brother John F. Giles, sister Mary E. Peterson and stepfather Alfred Church. Shirley is survived by five children: Judy (Paul) DesRosiers of Gastonia, NC; James (Jean) J. MacInnis of Stone Mountain, GA; Scott R. MacInnis of Beverly, MA; Eileen C. Murphy of Austin, TX and Elizabeth L. Knighton of Tacoma, WA. She leaves a special sister-in-law Rita MacInnis, her friend since high school, an aunt, Eve Campbell, several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Lorraine Popiehiuck, and a sister, Charlotte Dexter. Shirley will be interred next to Ray, in MA, at a later date. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Case for facilitating Moms transition from Massachusetts to Hospice here in Gastonia. Well be forever grateful for the kindness and dignity with which our mother was treated by our Hospice team. Special thanks to Tammy for being with us at the end. Instead of flowers, please consider a donation in Shirleys name to Gaston Hospice, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28054. The family is being served by McLean Funeral Directors, Gastonia.
