Mellen, William J. (Bill), age 83, of Ashland, MA passed away peacefully at his daughters home in Millbury on Monday, March 11 after a struggle with esophageal cancer. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Frank Mellen and Lillian (Holmes) Mellen. Bill is survived by his sons, Gary Mellen and his partner Jodi Bilodeau of Milton, NH, Dana Mellen and his wife Patty of Beach Park, IL, and James Mellen and his wife Kathy of Jackson, NJ, and his daughter, April Mellen and her partner Nancy David of Millbury, MA. He is also survived by his brothers, Frank Mellen of Nashua, NH, and Francis Mellen of Framingham, MA, six grandchildren, Jamie Bourdeau, Jenna Richard, Jeremy Michael Mellen, Devon Pope, Joey Gratacos, and Dustin Mellen, as well as seven great grandchildren. He also leaves his former wife and friend Shirley Mellen of Jackson, NJ, his special friend and companion Alvine Thibodeau of Ashland, MA, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Due to the death of his mother when Bill was only two years old, He spent many years in the Massachusetts foster care system before settling in Ashland, MA in his late teens. Bill served for one year at the end of World War II with the United States Merchant Marines Maritime Service followed by three years with the United States Air Force. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during the Korean Conflict and earned the rank of Corporal. He was awarded his High School Diploma (class of 1949) from Ashland High School in 2001 under the Operation Recognition Veterans program awarding diplomas to veterans who left school to join the WWII effort. During his working career, Bill worked for both local and long distance trucking companies followed by 13 tears as Foreman for the Town of Ashlands Highway Department, retiring in 1991 due to work related injuries. He also served as Trustee on the Ashland Cemetery, Park & Tree Commission in the mid 1980s. Bill enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the gatherings in Kennebunk, ME, and loved going to the beach and to Southwick Zoo. He was an avid Golfer and longtime member of the Phil Ernst Mens Senior Golf League at Millwood Gold Club in Framingham and loved rooting for the New England Patriots and Boston Bruins. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 9 a.m. at St. Cecelias Church, 54 Esty St., Ashland, MA, followed by burial at Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland.
