John W. "Jack" Doherty, 71, a resident of Lancaster since August 2012, and a former 46 year resident of Natick, died Wednesday April 10, 2013 at home. He was the husband of Rita A. (Pisano) Doherty with whom he shared 49 years of marriage. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late John H. and Eleanor (Murphy) Doherty. Raised in Somerville, he was a graduate of Somerville High School and held an associates degree from Northeastern University. Mr. Doherty was a veteran of the US Navy during the Vietnam Era and later served the Commonwealth and his country as a member of the National Guard for many years. He was best known for his service to the Town of Natick, as a police officer from 1968 until his retirement in 1997 as a detective. Jack was a member of the Natick Lodge of Elks, the Massachusetts Police Association and enjoyed summering at Wells Beach in Maine. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sons: John W. "Jackie" Doherty, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Douglas, Michael F. Doherty and his wife Nancy of Franklin and Patrick J. Doherty and his wife Gilda of Lancaster; 4 grandchildren: Michael, Caroline, Nathan and Jack; a brother: Neil F. Doherty and his wife Carol of Milford, a sister: Arlene E. Doherty of Medway, and a brother-in-law: Ralph Norris of Natick. He was the brother of the late Eleanor K. Norris. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday April 16 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Linus Church, 119 Hartford Street, Natick. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, South Natick. Visiting hours are Monday April 15 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Boyle Bros. Funeral Home, 173 Union Ave., Framingham.
