CUMBERLAND GAP, Tenn. — Thurman Smith, 70, of Cumberland Gap, TN, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014 at the UT Medical Center. Born in Arjay on March 24, 1944, he was the son of the late Elbert and Viola Hubbard Smith. He had been a coal miner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Sylvia Smith; daughter, Regina North; grandchild, Sarah North; brothers and sisters, Freda Frost, Birchell Smith; brother-in-law, Donald Fugate, Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Connie Washam Smith; children, Robert Smith (Tina Farmer); Charles (Shannon) Haley and Charlene (James) Short; grandchildren, Jessica North; Jonathan, Sarah, Jordan, Niki and Chad Smith; Travis Farmer; Tyler Money; Cheyenne, Jamie, Haley and Kalee Short; Kendra Haley; and Steven Farra; brothers and sisters, Virginia Sue Fugate; Beulah Mae (Lacy, Jr.) Jones; Evelyn (Rev. Ova) Grubbs; Esclene (Arthur) Ellison; Curtis Smith and Frank (Barbara) Smith; brother and sister-in-law; Clayton and Carolyn Washam; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Services were at 8:00 PM Monday at the Arjay Pentecostal Church with Rev. Gary Wagner and Rev. Randall Beverly.
Burial will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday at the Wallsend Cemetery at Wallsend with Lacy Jones, Jr., Chad Jones, Charles Haley, Jeremiah Fugate and Donald Fugate, Jr. as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 6 until the funeral time at the Arjay Pentecostal Church.
