Fred McCrarey

SOMERSET — Fred V. McCrarey, 91, passed away on Tuesday, February 18th, 2014, with his family by his bedside at his home in Somerset, Ky.

Fred was born January 9th in 1923 in Tinsley, Ky. in Bell County and was one of nine children, three of them half-siblings. His father, Fred G. McCrarey, was a farmer and coal miner. His mother Alma Erie Hoskins was a homemaker. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Arthur and Harold, two sisters Vina Irene and Audrey, and three half-siblings Laura Stano, Robert McCrarey, and Amanda Blanton.

At 17, he labored in the coal mines of Bell County, then went on to drive a truck for the Civilian Conservation (CCC), building fire trails for fire fighters. He left home for World War II and landed on the beaches of Normandy in 1944 and later that year fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Following his time serving three tours in the U.S. Army in General Patton's Fifth Army he returned to working in the coal mines and then began work at General Motors in Detroit, Mich. He worked for 35 years as a job setter for Rolling Mills and met his wife, Juanita Adams while she poured his coffee as a diner waitress. Juanita and Fred married on March 11th in 1952 in Detroit, Mich.

He was a 32nd degree Mason. His interests included family, horse racing, and making sure his family was well taken care of.

He is survived by his sister Alma Christine in Corbin, Ky., daughter Deborah McCrarey-Flynn and her spouse Mark Flynn, son Fredrick W. McCrarey and his spouse Cheryll, and daughter Alma L. McCrarey-Hinojosa and her spouse Arnie Hinojosa, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Any donations in lieu of flowers should be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland.

Visitation was held on Thursday February 20, 2014 from 12 pm until 6pm in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Graveside Services were held on Friday February 21, 2014 at 1pm in the Pineville Cemetery in Pineville, KY.
