TAZEWELL, Tenn. — Mr. Thomas Eugene Woodward, age 91 of Tazewell, TN, was born February 14, 1923 in Middlesboro, KY and passed away June 3, 2014 at the Claiborne County Medical Center. Thomas had resided in the Claiborne County Nursing Home since February 2011.

Thomas was the son of John Edward and Minerva Herrell Woodward. At the age of 12 Thomas lost his father in a coal mining accident and was sent to live in a fraternal orphanage home for several years as a teenager. He returned to Claiborne County to help on the farm and finish his graduation from Claiborne County High School. After graduation he volunteered into the US Army Air Corps during early WWII and served faithfully prior to being discharged at the end of the war with the rank of Sergeant. Thereafter he entered and graduated from the University of Tennessee. Thomas held several positions with various employers and retired after many years with the R.L. Polk & Company, while having spent most of his adult life in Memphis TN, until his failing health brought him to the Claiborne County Nursing Home.

Preceding Thomas in death are his parents John Edward and Minerva (Herrell) Woodward; Sisters: Bessie Rice, Maggie (Peggy) Gable, Virginia Coldiron, and Hazel Carter; Brother John E. Woodward Jr.; Wife: Betty A. Miller Woodward.

Survivors include his son, John Walter Woodward of Memphis, TN; Sister: Reva Smith of Clinton, NC; Brother: Wade B. Woodward and wife Peggy of Tazewell, TN; A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Thomas was married to Norma Rodriguez of Tampa, FL.;

Evelyn Davis of Gastin, AL with step daughter Jeanne;

Betty A. Miller Woodward with 4 step children: Georgeann, Susanne, Randy, Annet Pettys, and John Walter his son by this marriage.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 6PM until 8PM at the Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted 10AM Friday in the Claiborne-Overholt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David Woodward, his nephew officiating. Eulogy will be provided by his brother Wade Woodward.

Burial will follow in the Cave Springs Cemetery with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Thomas's memory for the study and cure for Alzheimer disease.
