MIDDLESBORO — Jimmie Smith, age 85, Middlesboro, KY passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at her home. She was born July 27, 1929 in Tazewell, TN to the late Ruth Gourley and John L. Smith. She has lived to mourn the loss of three sisters, Rose Barton, Jackie Lloyd, and Terrie Kallanik; and five brothers, Jo Ed, Bill, Tip, Tom, and Pat Smith.
She graduated high school in 1943, attended Lincoln Memorial University, and graduated with a degree in Education from the University of Tennessee in 1953. She taught Health and Physical Education in Tennessee, New York and Virginia and earned a Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia in 1970. She taught school for thirty years before retiring. She was an avid outdoor person and loved camping, hiking, canoeing, golf, and nature photography, as well as having a major interest in genealogy.
Jimmie was much loved and shall be missed by her immediate family. She is survived by one sister, Margaret Cozad of Bement, Illinois; and two brothers, Richard and Roger of Middlesboro, KY. There are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will also feel the void left by her passing, including John and Fran Arehart and Jeane Bentley of Farmville and Richmond, VA.
A gathering and memorial celebration of her life is planned for August 16, 2014 and her remains will be laid to rest at Liberty Cemetery in Tazewell, TN where her parents and many ancestors are buried.
