News Death Notice
SHAFOR, Sr., James J. born 1933 in Hamilton, Ohio to Catherine and Clarence "Piggy" Shafor passed Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012. Jim graduated from Hamilton Catholic High School where he played football. He continued his football career at the University of Dayton as Captain of the Flyers as well as being named to the All-Catholic Team. He graduated with a B.S. in Economics and Business Math. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He moved to Middletown, Ohio in 1959 where he taught for St. Mary's Catholic School, coached football at Fenwick High and eventually spent most of his coaching and teaching career of thirty-two years at Middletown High School. He retired to Holden Beach, North Carolina in 1987 where he participated in city government, sat on the committee for the annual Festival by the Sea and in later years served as a member of the Brunswick County Planning and Zoning Board. He is preceded in death by both parents and his wife, Janet K. Pflanzer married 58 years upon his death. He is survived by one brother Gene Shafor of Fairfield, Ohio, and his seven children; Cheryl (Les) Landen of Middletown, Cynthia (David) Sepos of Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, Christine Mack of Middletown, Jennifer (Bruce) Lakeman-Shafor of Middletown, James Shafor, Jr. of Middletown Catherine Shafor of Supply, North Carolina and Charley (Edwin) Shafor of Middletown as well as 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held Sat., Oct. 20 at Holy Trinity Church at 11 am. An open house will follow at the Middletown Art Center, 130 N. Verity Pkwy, Middletown from 12:00-2:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of Butler & Warren Counties, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420. Arrangements are by Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home.
