Dorothy Shaw Obituary

Dorothy Foley Shaw, 90, of Rock Hill, SC passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 17, 2013.
Born in Middletown, CT on June 22, 1922, Dorothy was the daughter of the late William and Lottie Mae Foley. She attended the University of Connecticut and was employed by the Aetna Insurance Company, the Rationing Board during World War II, and as a census taker in 1950 and 1960, but her principal occupation was that of a dedicated and skillful homemaker. She married the late Donald Shaw, Sr. in 1943 and they lived together in Connecticut until 1957 when they relocated to Rock Hill, SC.
Dorothy was a devoted member of St. Anne Catholic Church. She was an avid traveler who savored the culture of Europe on hermany trips there. She delighted in her elaborate, classically styled gardens, designed, built, and nurtured by her own hand. She wasa certified Master Gardener. In her younger days, she was an enthusiastic bridge player and until the very end a great Scrabble player. Her motto: I tried.
In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her sisters, Jane Euston and Barbara Peck. She is survived by her sisters, Marjorie Schick of Chesapeake, VA and Patricia Cardini of Middletown, CT and her four children: Donald Shaw, Jr. of Farmington, CT; Susan Whisonant of Rock Hill, SC; Penelope Edwards of York, SC; and William Shaw of York, SC. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild - making a fifth generation, in which she took great pride.
A service to celebrate Dorothy's life was held Saturday, February 23, 2013 at St. Anne Catholic Church. Burial followed at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill, SC.
