Michael Amara Obituary

MIDDLETOWN >> Michael E. Amara, 68, of Middletown CT and Venice FL passed away on Sept 3, 2013 after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He is survived by his beloved wife Janice Carmichael Amara, his sister and her husband Phyllis and Sal Sapia of Middletown and several nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. His service in the US Military was transformative for him and he returned to Middletown full of ambition. He obtained his GED through Middletown Adult Education and subsequently went on with his studies to become a Registered Nurse and to earn a Masters Degree. He worked for the State of Connecticut in the field of substance abuse. The City of Middletown and the YMCA were but two of his passions. Many who knew Michael will remember him running all over town with his buddies from the YMCA. He ran the New Haven Road Race on Thanksgiving Day for many years as well as other local races and marathons. He loved his hometown of Middletown and worked hard to advance the interests of the City and its citizens through many avenues, including his work at the Chamber of Commerce. He was privileged to be elected to serve as a member of the Common Council and Board of Education during the 1980s.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning at 9 a.m. from the D'Angelo Funeral Home 22 South Main Street, Middletown, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Pius X Church. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Sebastian Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Funeral Home Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
Any who wishes to do so may make donations in Michael's memory to the Northern Middlesex YMCA.

I am saddened to hear about Mike's passing and I send my thoughts and prayers to Mike's family.I met Mike at The YMCA in 1980 after I had graduated from college. I used to run with him and some of the regular guys frequently. Mike was such a positive, charismatic person. Our runs wre always fun and we all laughed. I ran my first New Haven Road Race with Mike and we pushed each other throughout the run. I believe The Good Lord puts us all in places with different people at different times. I'm thankful that He gave me the chance to meet someone like Mike.
