Richard LeBrasseur Obituary

Dick LeBrasseur, 70, of Middletown, CT, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2013 at Middlesex Hospital's Weiss Hospice Unit after a living for five years with renal cell carcinoma. He leaves his wife of 30 years, Karen (Bartolotta) LeBrasseur .
Dick was born in Nahma, Michigan, the son of Fern C. LeBrasseur of Muenster, Texas and the late Clayton J. LeBrasseur . Besides his wife and mother, he leaves his son, Rick LeBrasseur, of Edinburgh, Scotland and his daughter, Andrea LeBrasseur, of Centerbrook, CT; his brother and sister-in-law Jon and Monica LeBrasseur of Muenster, TX; his niece, Kristin LeBrasseur, of Dallas, TX; his aunt and uncle with whom he lived during his high school years, Wilma and Elroy Zimmermann of Escanaba, Michigan; many cousins - especially Judy Gaston of Vadnais Heights, Minnesota.. He also leaves his father-in-law, Angelo Bartolotta, of Middletown, CT. He was predeceased by his mother-in-law, Helen Bartolotta. He leaves many friends, old and new, who have provided endless love and support to both Karen and Dick during his long illness.
Dick graduated from the University of Michigan in 1965 with a B.A. in English followed by an M.A. in Administration and Curriculum Development. He was a Regents Scholar and was awarded a C.S. Mott Fellowship.
Dick's career spanned 30 years in the Education and Publishing business. He began his career as a high school English teacher in Grand Blanc, Michigan. In 1968, he was hired by American Education Publications (My Weekly Reader) where he held many positions including editorial, marketing and advertising until he later became President and CEO of the Weekly Reader Corporation owned by Primedia Corporation. He ended his publishing career in New York City as President of the Primedia Supplemental Education Group as well as having been elected as a Corporate Vice President of Primedia, Inc.
After he retired, Dick spent five years as a Middlesex Hospital Hospice Volunteer. His time as a Hospice Volunteer was a spiritually rewarding experience.
Dick loved life. He was a voracious reader, a quick wit, loved music and dancing, the ocean at East Beach in Rhode Island and he was an avid sports fan especially enjoying golf, the NY Yankees and the NCAA March Madness tournaments. Go Blue!
The family wishes to thank his doctors and caregivers, especially Dr. Mark Kimmel who was with him every step of this journey -- also thank you to the staffs at Middlesex Oncology and Middlesex Hospital Hospice who preserved his dignity and provided physical and mental support to Dick and all of us.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Middlesex Hospital Weiss Hospice Unit, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457. A service will be held at D'Angelo Funeral Home, 22 South Main St. in Middletown on Tuesday, July 30 at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family may call from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the service.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Dick was always kind to me while I worked with and for him at Weekly Reader. He was also the only boss I ever cried in front of...however briefly! He handled the situation with humanity and compassion. My job working with him was the hardest job I ever loved. He was a good man. So sorry to learn of his passing.

Dear Karen,
You and Dick always opened your hearts and your home to me. Dick was such a gentle man. I no sooner arrived at your home, that Dick had already carried my suitecase upstairs to the room I stayed in. He always truyly listened when we talked, and was always genuinely interested. I always felt completely welcome and loved. He was an amazing man, who never made anyone feel uncomfortable in his presence. He was kind and accepting to all people, and believed everyone had something to offer. He will be so missed, and his kindness and integrity touched my heart. Love Ann

Dear Rick and Andrea,

I am so sorry I couldn't be with you this morning to pay my respect on the passing of your father. There is nothing that can compare to the love we have for our parents, and losing one of them is never easy. May your fond memories bring you peace. Have faith that your dad is in a better place and that someday you will be together again. I'm sure he will be looking down on you with a smile of pride in the beautiful people you have both become. Godspeed - Beverly

Dear Karen,
Dick hired me at Weekly Reader and it was the best job I ever had. He taught me so much about not only the job but life in general. Dick called me after my father died in 2005 and gave me hope that life can go on without someone you love. You were very blessed to have Dick in your life for so many years. He was a gift and I will never forget him! He also never forgot a birthday!

Sometimes I'm at a loss for words...which isn't often. Today is one of those days. We had the pleasure of seeing Dick just a short few weeks ago. He looked great and was happy to be celebrating one of the Ya-Ya's sons wedding. Had I known that a few weeks later he wouldn't be here, I would have talked to him longer. Both Karen and Dick have ALWAYS been good to my brother and I and so generous to my children as well. Dick, you will never ever be forgotten. You were one of the kindest men I've known. He was simply the best and the brightest—one of the smartest (not to mention cutest) guys in the room. Any room! He was blessed with brains, humor, business acumen, athletic ability, and something more: the capacity to give and receive tremendous love. As I grieve the premature loss of my longtime colleague and friend, I celebrate the loving 30-year partnership that sustained him and inspires us all. My heart and prayers are with you, Karen. Rick and Andrea, hugs and blessings.

To Karen and family and friends (many my XEP colleagues) my sincere condolences. Working for Dick in the earliest part of my CT career was exciting, educational and an absolute joy. Dick was CREATIVE, care free, giving and totally convinced he knew more about the business than anyone else in the building... aka oozed confidence.

He was a great mentor to me during my XEP management rotation and I will always remember his teaching and his PASSION. God Bless

July 27, 2013

Dick was one of the first ones to "warn" me about the family I was about to get myself into when I first met Chris! LOL And that family included his wife Aunt Katie, himself and the many other girlfriends that Judy has to this day who we love immensely.
Dick always had a smile on his face whenever we would see him and he would always love to play with our daughter, Devyn, who she adoringly called him "Uncle Kicky" and he started teaching her the wonderful game of golf, too.
It's still so hard to realize this enormous loss we are all suffering with his passing but he will always have a very special place in all of our hearts and we are all better people to have known him and called him our friend. Love and miss you, Uncle Kicky xoxoxox
