Romanie Gussenhoven Obituary

Romanie M. Gussenhoven, of Portland, formerly of Killingworth, died unexpectedly at home on Sunday, April 14th, 2013 at the age of 77. She was born in Leiden, The Netherlands, the daughter of Joseph and Maria (Verborgh) Gussenhoven. Romanie grew up in Holland during WW II and was educated in a Catholic boarding school after the early death of her mother. She was married and immigrated to Canada in 1957 and then to the United States with her former husband Rudolph Klein-Robbenhaar. They settled in Killingworth where they raised their four children. During the 1960's she began driving a school bus eventually working her way up to Director of Transportation for RSD #17 where she still worked as a "super-sub" driver after her retirement in 2001. Wherever Romanie lived she was an active and vital member of the community. She was a founding member of The Killingworth Volunteer Ambulance Association and was one of the original parishioners of the St Lawrence Catholic Church. After moving to Portland in 2003 she became active in her new community, Grandview Farms, joined the Brownstone Quorum and served on the Portland Housing Authority. Romanie loved the outdoors, whether biking, hiking, snow-shoeing, clearing brush by the CT River or "puttering" in her beloved gardens. She will always be remembered for her candor, quick smile and sociable nature. Romanie is survived by one brother, George Gussenhoven of Leiden, three children, Mary Robbenhaar –Fretz and husband James (Killingworth), John Klein-Robbenhaar (East Haven) and Andrew Klein-Robbenhaar and wife Belinda (Acton, ME). Oma also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren, Michael, Julie and husband Mark, Hannah, Heidi and Johan and many nieces and nephews here in the US, Canada and The Netherlands as well her faithful feline companions Lucky and Lucyfurr. Romanie was predeceased by two sisters, Maria and Annie, brother, Jacques, former husband, Rudolph Klein-Robbenhaar and son, Robert F Klein-Robbenhaar.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 22, 2013 at 11 am at St. Mary's Church, 51 Freestone Avenue in Portland. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Killingworth Ambulance Association, 325 Route 81, Killingworth, CT 06419, Brownstone Quorum, Inc., PO Box 402, Portland, CT 06480, or the Portland Food Bank, 7 Waverly Avenue, Portland, CT 06480. To all of Romanie's family, I was so saddened to hear of the unexpected loss of Romanie. I always looked forward to our monthly visits at the Portland Senior Center. She was larger than life, an energetic, warm, loving and extremely kind person. She was also FUNNY, we shared many stories and much laughter. It was a privilege to have known her. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

To all Romanie's children and grandchildren - Romanie evokes memories of a unique and spirited lady. She could be decisive and yet light hearted. Romanie will be sorely missed, not only in the RSD 17 community, but in the community of life. Barbara Day

To Romanie's dear family,
I was very saddened to hear of the passing of your wonderful mother. In our years of living in Killingworth, I'm sure she was the bus driver for almost all of my six children. I loved her humor and such a positive person.
May your memories sustain you at this very difficult time.

Dear Klein-Robbenhaar family, I was very saddened to learn of your loss. Over the years, I always enjoyed seeing and caring for your mother. She had a very warm, engaging manner. As it happens, I'm currently in S.Africa, appreciating the strong influence of the Dutch culture here. On behalf of our entire office, I'd like to extend deepest sympathies to you all. Dear Mary Lou and family...I am deeply saddened and shocked with your mom's untimely passing. Romanie was a very special, caring person with whom I spent many happy and fun filled times. Her unselfish ways will surely be missed but her smile, determination and dedication to her fellow man will be a beautiful lasting memory. Rest in Peace my very dear and special friend. I will miss you...xo

Mary Lou, John & Andrew, So sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I always so enjoyed seeing your mom around Killingworth growing up. I enjoyed talking to your mom -she was very friendly and kind. I looked up to her both physically(!) and figuratively! I hope that doesn't sound disrespectful as I look up to all you Klein-Robbenhaars-you are all taller than me!! And I loved her accent! I hope she and my mom, who passed away in Nov. 2012 are having a wonderful time in heaven. John, I still remember you wiggling your ears as an alter boy at St. Lawrence and making us laugh and Mary Lou, I cherish our Morgan track team memories! Love & prayers, Norene (Harrison) Koester

First, let me say I'm sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of Mrs. Klein-Robbenhaar (her name to us children all our growing-up years) as our elementry school bus driver. She was our favorite because she drove fast and those of us in the seats at the back of the bus had fun bouncing around as we flew over the narrow, bumpy Hidden Lake Road. On one such ride home, my head came down hard on a metal bar which in those days topped all the seatbacks. I split my chin open. My mom must not have been home at the time, and yours sprung into action. She took me to her own Dr., had me stitched up (I have a slight scar to this day) and delivered me home all patched up before my parents even knew there was an injury. Mrs. K knew how to take charge and get things done.

MLKR F, I am shocked and so saddened...I just saw your amazing Mom (post THR) at Mass and our NECC concert. She looked great. My heart breaks for you and your brothers. She is at home with The Lord and her beloved, Robert. Please accept my sincerest sympathies...she was so full of life, all the time! She will be missed immensely...

Our loving prayers go out to all the Gussenhoven-Robbenhaar families. Romaine was a "one of a kind" woman who had lightening quick wit and straight-forward sense. I loved my years working with her at RSD 17 and her faithful following of our band. May time heal the pain of today with memories of yesterdays. Heaven has a "take charge" angel in their midst

To all the KRs, Oma was a truly special person. You know she acted as a mother to me and a grandmother to Rita and Rob in all the years that we lived next to each other. I missed her the day she moved away to Portland and will continue to miss her now. She was an unforgettable character and will be fondly remembered. XOXO Diane Flynn
