My Nonna was the most amazing woman on earth - more like a mother to me than a grandmother. She was funny, loving, caring, and incredibly smart. She taught me so many things - like how to sew a cover, even though I was never as good as her. Every winter, she made us warm covers and slippers with so much love.

She always took care of my mother and us, right up until her very last day. Even then, she would still ask if we were okay or if we needed anything. I had such a special connection with my Nonna - I used to call her Nonnina.

As she got older, she would sometimes fall, and strangely, I could sense it even in my sleep. I´d wake up, run to her, and catch her before she hit the floor. It was like a premonition - our bond was that strong.

I hope she´s proud of me and resting peacefully in heaven. She had converted to Islam ten years before she passed and was buried in an Islamic funeral.

I love you, Nonna. I miss you deeply. See you soon, inshallah.

What I will always remember was her smile and how her face would light up at the sight of a nephew or neice. When I lived in FL, every Sunday at 10:00am my phone would ring, and it was Aunt Nella calling to check on how I was doing? And if had eaten !! Rest in peace Zia. Sal Garofalo
