Betty Wiley, age 89, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2012, with her loving daughter, Nancy, by her side. She was preceded in death by her father, Col. Richard A. Jones; mother, Harriet Meriwether Jones, who died when Betty was 6 years of age; husband, William A. Wiley, former First Selectman of Haddam, CT; brother, Richard M. Jones; and her stepmother, Eva Drake Jones. She was born at Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, DC.
Betty's early and teen years were spent on Army posts, among them Ft. Wm. McKinley, Philippine Islands, where she had many lifelong friends. After attending Brenau College, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, Betty joined the Navy during WWII. While serving, she met her husband, a WWII Marine (Raider). Betty and her husband, Bill, lived in CT for 36 years. In 1989 she moved to Albuquerque to be close to two of her children. Betty was a lifelong golfer, hole-in-one at age 70; bridge player; walked several miles every day; and she volunteered at a local hospital. She had many friends in CT, Albuquerque and across the country.
Betty is survived by her four children, William A. Wiley Jr. and Nancy E. Wiley of Albuquerque; Stephen R. Wiley and his wife Christine of NC; and Elizabeth L. Wiley of CT. She took great pride in her children, and in her three granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. She also is survived by three brothers and one sister.
A celebration of life will be held in Albuquerque on 1/26/13. Burial will be in the Spring 2013 in the family plot in the Higganum-Burr Cemetery, CT.
